President Donald Trump has revived his push to rename major bodies of water after America, floating the idea of rebranding the Atlantic Ocean even after Googles chief executive pushed back on the proposal.
According to Business Insider, President Trump told supporters at a rally in Mississippi on Monday night that his administration is looking beyond earlier geographic name changes. We have a lake, and we have a gulf. Now we need a river and an ocean, Trump told the crowd while discussing renaming the Atlantic Ocean the American Ocean and joking, I think Europe will be thrilled.
The president previously recounted at a South Carolina rally last Wednesday that he had personally phoned Google CEO Sundar Pichai to pitch renaming the Atlantic on Google Maps. Trump joked that the tech giant was still rattled from his earlier executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario as the Gulf of America and Lake America.
Google Maps updated its U.S. labels for the Gulf of America and Lake America after those executive orders took effect, citing its longstanding policy of following official federal government geographic databases. Users outside the United States still see the previous names displayed first, followed by President Trumps updated American designations in brackets.
When President Trump pressed Pichai on relabeling the Atlantic Ocean, however, the Google chief urged him to reconsider. Trump told supporters that Pichai replied, This time Im not doing it, and explained, Oceans are different, sir. They cover really a lot of countries. Please dont ask us to do that.
Following that conversation, Trump told the South Carolina crowd last week, So Ill probably pass. I think lets keep it the Atlantic Ocean, after having first floated Trump Ocean or Ocean of the Americas at a Tennessee rally earlier this month. While teasing at Mondays rally that he is also eyeing a river to rename, the president assured his Mississippi audience, The Mississippi River, Im not changing the name of the Mississippi. I promise.
