Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez used a campaign stop in Maine to chastise fellow Democrats over transgender policy and to demand aggressive investigations of President Trumps administration, even as many in her party quietly retreat from the hard-left positions that helped fuel his return to the White House.
Speaking at a town hall in Portland alongside Maine Senate hopeful Troy Jackson, the New York lawmaker was confronted by a self-described transgender student who charged that Democrats had abandoned that community, according to the New York Post. Ocasio-Cortez, a leading figure on the partys progressive flank, seized the moment to distance herself from Democrats who have moderated on cultural issues after repeated electoral defeats at the hands of Republicans.
First and foremost, I want to just let you know how shameful and sorry I am that there are people out there that scare so easily after an election, she told the student, casting her colleagues as politically timid. I think its what people hate most about politics, which is politicians who will jump on this side or that side of the line at a moments notice, she added, before insisting, The moment you compromise the rights of a trans person in America, you compromise the rights of every citizen in America.
Her remarks came as many Democrats have recalibrated on transgender issues, particularly on biological males competing in womens sports and on irreversible medical procedures for minors, areas where Republicans have pressed a strong case for protecting children and preserving fairness for girls. The congresswoman, often floated as a possible 2028 presidential contender, had quietly removed she/her pronouns from her X biography shortly after President Trumps 2024 victory, a move widely seen as an attempt to soften her image with a broader electorate.
Theres plenty of people who may not understand or the conversation about gender may be very new to them, depending on who they are or where they live, she said, acknowledging the cultural divide that has left many voters skeptical of progressive gender ideology. However, our basic rights shouldnt have to matter.
Ocasio-Cortez then leaned into identity politics, declaring that her support for transgender causes was rooted in her own self-image. I dont support the rights of trans people just to protect my own rights, but I support the rights of trans women because Im a girls girl, she added with a laugh, a line that played well with activists but underscored how far her rhetoric sits from the concerns of parents and female athletes worried about safety and fairness.
During the wide-ranging question-and-answer session with Jackson, most attendees directed their questions to the high-profile Squad member rather than the local Senate hopeful, highlighting her celebrity status on the left. At one point, she turned her fire on President Trumps administration over the law-enforcement raid on fellow Squad Rep. Ilhan Omars Washington, DC, home, which was conducted to probe Omars citizenship status.
Ocasio-Cortez urged Democrats to weaponize congressional oversight against the administration, even as conservatives argue that President Trump has been working to depoliticize federal law enforcement after years of partisan abuse. Weve known the Department of Justice has also been weaponized in its absolutely groundless indictments of everyone from Tish James to Jerome Powell and so on and so forth, she said, portraying progressive officials as victims rather than the instigators of lawfare.
Day one, we need to be opening investigations into the head of every single one of these agencies, and we need to hold them accountable. Im talking subpoenas, Im talking investigations, she added. Everyone must be held to the same standard and rule of law, and we will never get our country back.
If we allow criminals to have cabinet seats in the United States of America. With Democrats like Ocasio-Cortez calling for sweeping probes while defending radical gender policies that many Americans reject, the party continues to signal that it is more interested in appeasing its activist base than addressing the cultural and legal overreach that helped propel President Trump back into office.
