Longtime international anchor Christiane Amanpour is set to depart CNN next year, marking the end of one of the networks most recognizable journalistic careers at a moment of profound change in the media landscape.
According to Mediaite, media reporter Brian Stelter revealed the move on Monday, posting that CNN legend Christiane @Amanpour, the networks chief international anchor, is departing the network next June. The announcement comes just weeks after President Trump ally David Ellison assumed control of CNNs parent company, following an $81 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery that placed CNN under the same corporate umbrella as CBS.
At a recent appearance in London, Amanpour openly addressed the shifting ideological currents in legacy media, pointing to the ideological realignment at CBS News and voicing her concern about the future direction of CNN. Her remarks underscored broader conservative worries that establishment outlets are being reshaped from the top down, often at the expense of clear-eyed reporting and traditional journalistic standards.
In a statement released Monday, Amanpour said, After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years! She added that she would end my daily shows across CNN and PBS at the end of this year, while continuing to maintain a weekly show on CNN through May and working on a smooth transition through June.
Amanpour used the moment to praise the colleagues who helped build her reputation as a war correspondent and global anchor. I want to thank all the amazingly talented people Ive worked with throughout this incredible journey. Especially my beloved show teams and field crews, she said, recalling assignments from the First Gulf War, to the horrors of the Bosnian War, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran and all the points in between.
She emphasized that its the teams and the camaraderie that counted so much, as we together battled to seek the facts, the evidence and the humanity, so that CNN could always broadcast the truth about the world and to the world, without fear nor favor. Looking ahead, Amanpour said, I will be continuing my successful podcast the Ex-Files with Global and look forward to interesting new projects down the line, and will always be rooting for CNN and maintaining its history of independent journalism. Remember: always be truthful, not neutral.
CNN Editor-in-Chief Mark Thompson acknowledged the gravity of her departure, stating, Im very sorry to see her go, but Ive come to accept that this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally. As Ellisons ownership ushers in a new era, Amanpours exit raises pointed questions about whether CNN will reclaim a more balanced, truth-driven posture or continue down the path that has alienated many viewers seeking rigorous, independent reporting.
