A National Guard member and a suspect were wounded by gunfire during a violent confrontation in Washington, D.C., late Sunday, authorities said

According to Fox News, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters that the Guard member was shot in the leg and that the suspect was also struck. So both have gunshot wounds, Carroll stated, adding, the National Guard member and the suspect.

Carroll emphasized that non-life-threatening injuries were reported for both individuals, and he said they are expected to survive. The suspect and the injured Guardsman were transported to local hospitals for treatment following the incident, he added.

The clash erupted as National Guard personnel attempted to break up a fight, underscoring the risks faced by law enforcement and military support units even when acting in a peacekeeping capacity. Carroll said there were roughly seven or eight Guard members riding in a van who got out of the vehicle when they encountered the altercation.

During the confrontation, three National Guard members discharged firearms, according to Carroll, a detail likely to draw scrutiny as officials review whether their use of force complied with protocol. As urban crime and public disorder continue to rise in many Democrat-run cities, the episode will almost certainly fuel renewed debate over public safety, support for law enforcement, and the proper role of the National Guard in restoring order on Americas streets.
