Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo has escalated his attacks on California Governor Gavin Newsom, declaring the Democrat leader disqualified from ever seeking the presidency over his alignment with billionaire interests and corporate power.
According to Breitbart, Ruffalo, a prominent figure on the left, has increasingly turned his fire on Newsom, particularly over the governors support for the Paramount takeover of Warner Bros. and now for Californias Proposition 42, a measure designed to block a state-level wealth tax on unrealized investment gains. The governor, frequently floated as a likely Democrat contender for the White House in 2028, is now facing withering criticism from within his own ideological camp, even as President Trumps second administration continues to highlight the failures of blue-state economic policies.
Ruffalo took to X on Friday to denounce Newsoms backing of Prop 42, framing the governor as a politician who exists to protect billionaires at the expense of ordinary citizens. Its beyond sad. Its beyond disappointing; at this point, its disqualifying for anyone with ambitions for higher office as a Democrat, or a Republican, for that matter, to be fighting to keep billionaires from being taxed while kids dont have health insurance and the cost of living goes sky-high, he wrote.
The actor, who has long championed progressive causes, argued that the ultra-wealthy are aggressively pursuing technologies that threaten American workers, all while benefiting from taxpayer support. These billionaires are also the ones hellbent on replacing entire workforces with the AI they are developing with our tax dollars (watch the Musk doc). We are also living through the largest wealth gap in modern history, he continued.
Ruffalo insisted that higher taxation is the only remaining tool to counter what he describes as a rigged economic system dominated by moneyed interests and compliant politicians. At this point, the only way to balance out the economic forces that have bought our politicians and keep rigging the game against working people is through taxes.
He then urged Newsom to reverse course, accusing the governor of repeatedly siding with corporations over public welfare, even when bipartisan lawmakers support reform. Lets hope Gavin gets some sense and walks this back. Its crazy that this is what he chooses to spend his political capital, and part of his legacy, doing. He vetoed the bill that would have put a kill switch on AI for our protection. He vetoed a bill that would have gotten forever chemicals out of cookware. Time and time again, he goes with corporate interests over the well-being of the people, even after his own bipartisan legislature votes for something, Ruffalo railed on.
Ruffalo also mocked Newsoms political style, warning Democrats against trying to create a left-wing version of the populist leadership they claim to oppose. And here we go again, he continued. Gavin, we arent looking for the Democratic version of Trump. That was a good goof. Please try something else. Its tired.
Casting himself as a voice for ordinary Americans, Ruffalo called for a leader willing to confront entrenched economic power rather than posture on social media. The people need a champion, man. A real, bona fide champion who isnt just tough in tweets or press conferences, but tough when it comes to the real imbalances people are struggling with every day: billionaires vs. people and the planet, he concluded.
Despite his own reported net worth exceeding $35 million, Ruffalo renewed his assault on Newsom over Prop 42 on Wednesday, tying it to the Paramount merger as part of a broader pattern of deference to the wealthy. Once again. Just like the Paramount Merger Gavin Newsom does what he always does. Sells out the working class people for the billionaires again and again. Not only that but endorses a bill that will make it impossible to tax the wealthy at all, he wrote on X, underscoring a growing rift inside the Democrat Party between its populist rhetoric and its cozy relationship with corporate elites.
