Off-Duty NYPD Detective Stabbed Seven Times After Alleged Chain-Snatch Attempt By Released Border Crossers

An off-duty New York City police detective was viciously stabbed multiple times in a daylight robbery attempt, in yet another case highlighting the deadly consequences of the nations broken border and sanctuary policies.

According to Gateway Pundit, Detective Jose Mercedes was attacked on Friday as he was clearing out the trunk of his car when two men on an e-bike rode up and allegedly tried to snatch his gold chain. Mercedes resisted, and the confrontation escalated into a savage assault in which he was stabbed at least seven times in the neck and leg before being rushed to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The New York Post reported that law enforcement sources have identified the accused knifeman as 25-year-old DAngelo Caraballo and the e-bike driver as 24-year-old Sneider Mejia, who is in the United States illegally and already had an ICE detainer issued against him. Mejia reportedly has one prior arrest from last year on his record, though that case has been sealed, while Caraballo has two prior arrests, including a menacing charge for allegedly threatening to stab a person who rented him a room in the Bronx in July and a 2025 gun possession charge involving a loaded .380 Taurus gun in his car, according to those same sources.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, citing Department of Homeland Security contacts, reported that both suspects are illegal aliens from the Dominican Republic who were previously caught and released at the southern border under lax federal enforcement. Melugin stated, Im told by DHS sources that the two suspects wanted for attempted murder in connection to the stabbing & robbery of an off-duty NYPD detective in NYC on Friday are both Dominican illegal aliens who were caught and released at the AZ border by the Biden administration & both have lengthy criminal histories in NYC, including an ignored ICE detainer.

Melugin further reported that Both suspects remain at large, and while NYPD hasnt officially released their names yet, @FoxNews is told theyve been identified as 24-year-old SNEIDER MEJIA BAUTISTA and 25-year-old DANGELO RAFAEL JEAN CARABALLO. He detailed how Mejia Bautista was arrested by Border Patrol after crossing the border illegally near San Luis, AZ on 12/2/2022 with his family, and they were all released into the country, adding that the family has been under deportation orders since May 8, 2025.

Despite those deportation orders, Mejia Bautista was allegedly arrested by NYPD in the Bronx for criminal possession of a weapon on October 3, 2025, after which ICE filed a detainer on him, but the detainer was ignored and he was released from local custody, and he was also arrested on January 7, 2025, for criminal possession of stolen property. Melugin added that Im told that DANGELO RAFAEL JEAN CARABALLO, a Dominican national, was arrested by Border Patrol after crossing the border illegally near San Luis, AZ on 2/2/2023, and he was released into the country with a future court date. He has five prior arrests in NYC, but no ICE detainers were filed because he was released from custody so quickly each time.

This case underscores the public-safety disaster created when open-border policies and sanctuary-style refusals to honor ICE detainers collide, leaving violent offenders free to roam American streets. As President Trumps second administration pushes to restore law and order, conservatives will undoubtedly point to Detective Mercedes near-fatal stabbing as a stark reminder that border security, immigration enforcement, and cooperation with federal authorities are not abstract policy debates, but matters of life and death for American citizens and the officers sworn to protect them.
