Jacob Freys Former Aide Learns His Fate As Judge Hands Down Sentence

A Minnesota man has been sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison for his role in a massive COVID-era child nutrition fraud that conservatives say epitomizes the dangers of bloated government programs and lax oversight.

According to the Gateway Pundit, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Abdi Nur Salah, of St. Paul, received a 33?month prison sentence for his participation in the Feeding Our Future scandal, a $250 million scheme that looted a federally funded child nutrition program during the pandemic. Prosecutors have described it as one of the largest fraud operations in American history, underscoring how quickly emergency spending and expansive welfare programs can become magnets for abuse when accountability takes a back seat to rapid disbursement.

Much of the stolen money was diverted into luxury cars, jewelry, real estate, and overseas accounts, funneled largely through Minnesota-based nonprofits tied to the local Somali community. A total of 78 individuals have been indicted or charged by the DOJ in connection with the scheme, revealing a sprawling network of grifters who treated taxpayer-funded nutrition aid as a personal slush fund.

The DOJ notes that Salah was first charged by indictment on September 13, 2022, and he entered a guilty plea on January 28, 2025. He is now the 31st defendant to be sentenced in the Feeding Our Future fraud case, a reminder that the clean-up from pandemic-era excess is still unfolding under President Trumps second administration.

Court filings show that Salah and his co-conspirators operated a purported nonprofit Federal Child Nutrition Program meal site called Stigma-Free International, which was sponsored by Feeding Our Future. When the Minnesota Department of Education announced it would no longer approve food sites run by restaurants and other for-profit entities, Salah acquired Stigma-Free International as a nonprofit vehicle to keep the fraudulent pipeline open against the Federal Child Nutrition Program.

Salah then transferred ownership of Stigma-Free International to his co-conspirators, who used it to launch additional Federal Child Nutrition Program sites across Minnesota. Per the DOJ, For 12 months from November 2020 to November 2021, Salahs co-conspirators fraudulently claimed to have served nearly five million meals to children at the Stigma-Free International sites, including by submitting fraudulent attendance rosters and invoices. Based on the fraudulent claims, Feeding Our Future paid out over $10 million in Federal Child Nutrition Program reimbursements to the Stigma-Free International sites.

Prosecutors say Salah also created and used multiple shell companies to receive and launder his share of the proceeds, a classic tactic in white-collar crime that thrives when bureaucracies grow too large to police themselves effectively. The defendant then used the funds for self-enrichment including purchasing homes, real estate, and businesses. In all, Salah received approximately $1,660,000 in Federal Child Nutrition Program funds.

United States Attorney Daniel N. Rosen condemned the conduct in stark terms, stating, This defendant decided to steal funds meant for vulnerable children. Todays sentence represents my offices unwavering commitment to holding accountable those who defraud the American taxpayers.

Abdi Nur Salah knew what that money was for. It was meant to feed children, and he helped turn it into his payday.

Robert J. Kuszynski, Acting Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigations Chicago Field Office, emphasized the human cost of the fraud, adding, Families counted on that program during a hard time, while he helped take from it. He continued, You can dress a scheme up as a nonprofit, but you cant make the money trail disappear. Our special agents followed it, and today Salah answers for where it led.

The Salah case highlights how quickly taxpayer-funded relief can be hijacked when government spending explodes and ideological resistance to strict oversight prevails, leaving vulnerable children and honest taxpayers to foot the bill. As more defendants are sentenced, conservatives will likely continue pressing for tighter controls, smaller programs, and a renewed focus on personal responsibility to prevent future abuses on this scale.
