A routine morning at a Los Angeles senior care facility turned into chaos when a maintenance worker allegedly pulled a handgun from a shopping cart and opened fire on his colleagues.
The incident unfolded shortly before 11 a.m. at the Progressive Home for the Elderly, a facility connected to the Progressive Community Missionary Baptist Church, where three staff members were shot and wounded. According to Gateway Pundit, 60-year-old Darry Arnette Barnes is accused of injuring three coworkers, with one victim listed in critical condition and two others reported to be in stable condition.
LAPD Deputy Chief Marc Reina stated that officers reached the scene within two minutes, a rapid response that likely prevented further bloodshed. When officers were initially unable to locate the suspect, the situation was escalated to a possible active-shooter scenario, and the facility was placed on lockdown.
Reina said officers ultimately took Barnes into custody without a fight, and investigators recovered the handgun believed to have been used in the attack. None of the approximately 100 elderly residents inside the building were struck by gunfire, a rare mercy in an otherwise harrowing episode.
Caregiver Dorothy Mobley told KTLA she was checking in at the front desk when she recognized the custodian and saw the confrontation begin. Mobley recalled that he told co-workers, Im tired of this, before allegedly drawing a firearm and opening fire, with video reportedly showing him shooting from the cart and then from behind a counter as another person dives for cover.
On Wednesday, prosecutors charged Barnes with three counts of attempted murder, and he is being held on $1 million bail. As Los Angeles continues to grapple with rising crime and ongoing concerns about public safety, especially in vulnerable settings like senior facilities, this case will likely fuel renewed calls for stronger security measures and serious accountability for violent offenders.
