CNN is crying foul after President Donald Trump announced that he would bar the liberal network from the White House, only to be met with a pointed rebuttal from his communications team.
According to The Blaze, President Trump wrote on Truth Social that he was banning CNN, MSNBC (which he referred to as MS NOW), and Politico from White House access, triggering a sanctimonious statement from CNN. The public deserves to hear about its government from independent voices, not just its leaders loyalists and allies, the network declared, casting itself as a neutral arbiter despite years of partisan coverage targeting Trump and his supporters.
CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting, the network insisted, defending its correspondents. We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government, it added, warning, Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally protected right.
The White House rapid response team answered by circulating a list of high-profile hoaxes it says CNN helped amplify, including the Jussie Smollett hate-crime narrative, the NASCAR noose controversy, and the long-debunked Russia collusion storyline. For many conservatives, those examples underscore why CNN is viewed less as an independent voice and more as a partisan actor that forfeited its credibility years ago.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression weighed in with its own concerns about the ban, emphasizing constitutional protections for the press. When the White House opens its doors to the press, it must comply with the First Amendment, the group said, while also acknowledging that The president is as free as any other person to criticize media coverage. But he cant ban outlets from the White House just because he doesnt like their reporting or commentary, they added, before stressing that Press credentials arent a reward for loyalty to the government.
A free, even adversarial, press is a sign of our countrys strength. The public deserves to hear about its government from independent voices, not just its leaders loyalists and allies.
