Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, are pouring millions into an effort to block California voters from adopting basic voter ID safeguards at the ballot box.
According to The Gateway Pundit, state campaign-finance filings reveal Hastings cut a $1 million check on September 3 to a labor-aligned committee opposing Proposition 39, while Quillin separately funneled $1.5 million into an ACLU-linked anti-Prop 39 operation. As reported by The Gateway Pundit, those combined contributions amount to $2.5 million from a single affluent Silicon Valley household determined to keep California among the dwindling number of states where citizens can cast a ballot without presenting a government-issued ID.
The New York Post first highlighted Hastings seven-figure donation earlier this week, and the Fair Political Practices Commissions (FPPC) latest ballot-measure donor disclosures corroborate both his and Quillins gifts. The FPPCs top-contributor list shows Hastings gave $1 million to the committee No on 39 Block Election Rigging.
Quillin, a prolific funder of left-wing causes, contributed $1.5 million to No on Prop. 39 Californians for Voting Rights. Together, their reported contributions total $2.5 million, a massive war chest aimed squarely at defeating a citizen-driven election integrity measure.
Proposition 39, a constitutional amendment slated for the November 3, 2026 ballot, would tighten voter identification and citizenship verification requirements long championed by conservatives as common-sense protections. Yet Democrat Attorney General Rob Bonta, who has repeatedly sided with progressive activists, intervened to recast the measure in the most inflammatory terms possible.
As The Gateway Pundit reported in July and August, Bonta rewrote the official ballot label from Establishes Additional Voter Identification and Citizenship Verification Requirements into the all-caps smear PROHIBITS CITIZENS FROM VOTING UNLESS THEY PRESENT GOVERNMENT-ISSUED IDENTIFICATION. A Sacramento judge then rubber-stamped Bontas wording, and supporters of Prop 39 call it a rigged title designed to panic low-information voters before they ever see the actual text.
This manipulation comes in a state The Gateway Pundit recently exposed for having some of the weakest registration standards in the country, where you can register online with no drivers license and no Social Security number. Under current California law, if any identification is requested at all, a voter can present a gym membership, insurance card, credit card, or even a prescription label as proof.
This is not Hastings first seven-figure foray into bolstering California Democrats and their policy agenda, underscoring a long-standing pattern of elite tech money underwriting the lefts resistance to election security reforms. Quillin has her own record: millions into criminal-justice committees, the failed Prop 16 racial-preferences campaign, and progressive prosecutor races.
Now she is the top-listed individual donor on the ACLU/Donor Table anti-voter-ID committee, tied with another Bay Area megadonor at $1.5 million each. For Californians who believe that showing a real ID to vote is a minimal safeguard in a constitutional republic, the Hastings-Quillin spending spree is a stark reminder of how aggressively the progressive donor class will fight to preserve a system that treats a prescription label as good enough for access to the ballot box.
