Joy Reid, a prominent voice on the left and former MSNBC host, has openly declared that she does not regard tens of millions of right-leaning Americans as her countrymen and would gladly accept a national breakup to separate from them.
Her remarks came during an appearance on Wajahat Alis The Left Hook podcast, where she painted conservatives as fundamentally malicious and unfit to share a nation with their political opponents, according to the Gateway Pundit. Reid described right-of-center Americans not as fellow citizens with differing views, but as a hostile bloc defined by emotional instability and moral corruption.
I have to be honest, I struggle with being countrymen with these people, Reid stated. I struggle with the idea that Im supposed to feel that these are my countrymen. These people hate us. They hate anyone who isnt them. And then when one of them steps one inch out of line, then they hate them too. They are full of rage, hate, cruelty. Theyre mean.
Reid then singled out conservative investigative journalist Laura Loomer as emblematic of the entire MAGA movement, dismissing millions of President Trumps supporters with a single broad brush. I mean, Laura Loomer is peak MAGA. Shes actually what they are, Reid commented. Theyre all like her. Some of them arent as vulgar and outwardly vulgar, but they all think like that and I truly struggle. I mean, the difference between us and them, as you said, is that if we win they get healthcare. When they win, we get destroyed, killed.
From there, Reid moved beyond rhetoric and into open fantasizing about a formal division of the United States into two separate nations. If you told me tomorrow there was a magical way to split the country in two, like they did with the Sudans and make an America A and America B. And they could just live in America B and be cruel to each other and have a circle jerk of hate and meanness and awfulness and just leave us alone with our liberal, goofy, give everybody healthcare, let everybody vote, let everybody read books and we could be in our country and they could be in theirs? I promise you I would take that deal.
Video of the exchange circulated widely, with critics noting that Reids rhetoric mirrors the very national divorce language she once denounced as dangerous when voiced by conservatives. In 2023, she used her MSNBC platform on The ReidOut to attack Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene after Greene suggested that red and blue states might eventually need to part ways.
At that time, Reid warned that such a separation would condemn Americans to an apartheid hellscape with zero healthcare and crappy public schools, framing the idea as an existential threat to democracy itself. Now, however, she embraces a magical way to split the country as an appealing escape from citizens she portrays as irredeemably hateful, underscoring a double standard in which calls for separation are intolerable from the right but acceptable when they serve a progressive desire to isolate and marginalize conservatives.
