Seattle Public Schools has confirmed that controversial Chief Sealth International High School teacher and self-described communist activist Ian Golash has formally resigned from the district following his appeal of an effort to terminate his employment.
The announcement followed confusion among parents and community members after Golashs name suddenly reappeared on Chief Sealths website, where he was once again listed as a teacher and head of the social studies department despite having been on leave for months. That online listing prompted speculation that the district had quietly reinstated him, even as concerns persisted over his conduct and radical political views, according to The Post Millennial.
Seattle Public Schools told The Ari Hoffman Show on Talk Radio 570 KVI that Golash is no longer employed by the district and that a formal agreement had been reached. The parties have reached a resolution that allows Seattle Public Schools and Ian Golash to move forward. Mr. Golash has resigned effective March 2, 2026. The District remains committed to providing a safe, supportive, and academically strong learning environment for every student.
When pressed on why Golashs profile had been restored to the Chief Sealth website months after his resignation date, the district offered only a vague assurance that the matter would be handled internally. Officials said they would be addressing any website preparations for the new school year directly with our teams, leaving parents without a clear explanation for the apparent inconsistency.
The district declined to reveal the terms of its resolution with Golash, including whether any financial settlement or concessions were involved. It also did not explain why his March resignation had not been publicly disclosed at the time, despite the intense public interest surrounding his case.
In July 2025, Seattle Public Schools had told The Ari Hoffman Show that it had initiated the process to terminate Golash following mounting complaints about his conduct and classroom behavior. The self-identified communist exercised his right to appeal and remained on administrative leave while the drawn-out process unfolded, highlighting how difficult it can be to remove ideologically driven educators from public schools.
Golash was first placed on leave in April 2024 after he pulled students out of class to confront a mobile billboard operated by Accuracy in Media that highlighted allegations of antisemitism and political indoctrination in his classroom. Rather than focusing on academics, he led minors into a political confrontation, underscoring concerns that classrooms were being used as platforms for radical activism rather than education.
During that confrontation, Accuracy in Media President Adam Guillette asked Golash whether the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack against Israel was justified. Golash answered, Yes.
When Guillette asked whether the reported rape of women at the Nova music festival was justified, Golash responded, Wheres the evidence that there was rape? His remarks echoed a broader trend on the far left of downplaying or denying atrocities committed by terrorist organizations when they target Western allies.
Asked whether women were murdered at the festival and whether their deaths were justified, Golash said, Yes, before adding, I think resistance against Israel is justified. Yes. These statements, made by a public school teacher entrusted with shaping young minds, fueled outrage among parents who expect educators to condemn terrorism, not rationalize it.
Outside the confrontation, Golash had posted statements questioning documented atrocities committed during the attack, writing, Hamas didnt behead anyone. Hamas didnt rape anyone. He further speculated, without evidence, that Israel was responsible for the charred bodies of Israeli civilians and accused the country of killing its own people while responding to the terrorists.
Golash concluded one of his posts by writing, also, fck Hamas, fck Israel, Im a communist. The vulgar declaration underscored his ideological extremism and raised serious questions about the judgment of district officials who had allowed him to remain in a classroom for years.
His classroom and school hallways reportedly featured images of Palestinian terrorists and slogans including Free Gaza and Long Live Palestine. Students previously told Accuracy in Media that they believed Golash was antisemitic and used his classroom to promote communist ideology, suggesting a pattern of political indoctrination rather than neutral instruction.
Golash first attracted widespread scrutiny in 2023 after failing a student who answered that only women can become pregnant and that only men have penises on a quiz titled Understanding Gender vs. Sex. That incident highlighted how radical gender ideology had seeped into coursework, punishing students for affirming basic biological realities that conflict with progressive orthodoxy.
A separate complaint alleged that Golash told a student that identifying as straight was offensive. Golash later acknowledged objecting to the term because he claimed it implied that people who are not heterosexual are crooked, a rationale that again placed ideological policing ahead of respecting students freedom of conscience.
A review of Golashs background also revealed multiple arrests in Oregon involving assault, criminal harassment and violating parole, as well as a harassment conviction. He additionally faced trespassing and harassment charges in Washington, raising concerns about the districts vetting process and its willingness to overlook a troubling criminal history.
Golash, an anti-police activist who has promoted Antifa-aligned and abolish the police rhetoric, was among the plaintiffs who received a settlement from Seattle, King County and Washington state over the government response to the 2020 riots. During the unrest, he led student protesters into the King County Jail and attempted to obstruct news cameras, further blurring the line between education and radical street activism in a district already under fire for prioritizing politics over parental rights and academic excellence.
