The unraveling of James Comeys carefully crafted public image has taken another hit, this time from inside his own extended family.
According to the Gateway Pundit, newly filed evidence in the federal criminal case against the former FBI director reveals that his wife, Patrice Comey, was sharply rebuked by a relative for amplifying what was described as a violent message aimed at Donald Trump. The exhibit, cited by investigative journalist Paul Sperry, shows a blistering text message accusing Patrice Comey of promoting a coded threat against the 47th president and condemning both her and her husband as hypocritical and intolerant.
Per investigative reporter Paul Sperry: I have held my tongue for a long time, but I just cant do it anymore. You guys have really gone off the deep end over the years with your TDS. 86 47? is a call for violence no matter how you spin it. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I am thoroughly embarrassed to have ever defended the absolute coward that is your husband. You and Jim are some of the least accepting, most hypocritical people Ive had the displeasure of knowing. I hope Jim goes to jail for his crimes. The raw frustration in that message underscores how deeply the Trump Derangement Syndrome culture has penetrated even elite households that once claimed the moral high ground.
The controversy centers on Comeys now-infamous Instagram post from May 2025, in which he shared a photo of seashells arranged in the sand to read 86 47, accompanied by the caption, Cool shell formation on my beach walk. In political slang, 86 47 is widely understood as a threat to eliminate/kill the 47th president, a meaning that cannot be easily dismissed as innocent beachside whimsy.
Last week, Sperry disclosed that federal investigators uncovered evidence suggesting the post was anything but accidental. He reported that there is proof that there is evidence that Jim Comeys wife Patrice sent him a Google screenshot of a non-violent definition of the term 86 two minutes before Comey posted his infamous rock picture of 86-47 on Instagram. That timing, now memorialized in an FBI affidavit, points to forethought and awareness that the phrase could be construed as a threat.
Paul Sperry further noted: BREAKING: An FBI affidavit for a search warrant in the James Comey presidential threat case reveals his wife Patrice Comey sent him a Google screenshot of a nonviolent definition of the term 86 two (2) minutes before Comey posted the alleged threat against President Trump, indicating some forethought his posting could be construed as a threat. For a man who once ran the nations premier law enforcement agency, the idea that he did not grasp the implications of such coded language strains credulity.
Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of North Carolina evidently agreed that the matter was serious enough to bring before a grand jury. Earlier this year, that grand jury indicted Comey on two felony counts tied directly to the Instagram post and its alleged meaning. COUNT ONE charges him with: Knowingly and willfully make a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon, the President of the United States; while COUNT TWO alleges he knowingly and willfully did transmit in interstate and foreign commerce a communication that contained a threat to kill the President, Donald J. Trump.
If convicted, Comey faces up to 20 years in federal prison, a stunning fall for a man who once portrayed himself as the sober guardian of the rule of law. The case also exposes the double standard that conservatives have long decried: when threats or incitements are directed at Republican leaders, the political and media class often rushes to minimize or rationalize them.
Comeys public defense has shifted over time, further eroding his credibility. In his first statement, he implied he had nothing to do with arranging the shells and that he merely stumbled upon a curious scene during a casual stroll. I posted earlier a picture of some shells I saw today on a beach walk, which I assumed were a political message. I didnt realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down, Comey previously said on Instagram.
That initial explanation painted him as an unwitting observer, a passive passerby who misread a harmless display. Yet as scrutiny mounted, Comey rolled out a more elaborate narrative involving his wife, attempting to recast the episode as a quirky misunderstanding rather than a targeted signal. He later peddled a BS story, as critics described it, elaborating on how he and Patrice supposedly interpreted the numbers in real time.
We were walking on the beach, we went to the beach to prepare for this week and we were walking back towards the road and we saw in the sand someone had arranged shells with numbers. And Patrice, my wife, said, why would someone put an address in the sand? and I said, I dont know and we stood over and I said, I think its some kind of political message, Comey said. The anecdote was clearly designed to portray the couple as bemused onlookers, not participants in any coded threat.
Comey then effectively shifted blame toward his wife, invoking her past restaurant work to justify the 86 reference. She said you know, when I was a server she did a lot of work in restaurants meant to remove an item from the menu when you ran out of ingredients. And I said, well to me, as a kid it always meant to leave a place, to ditch a place. And she said well that very clever you should take a picture of that and I did and posted it on my Instagram and though nothing more of it until I heard through her that people were saying that it was a call for some sort of assassination which is crazy! Comey said.
For many Americans, especially those on the right who watched Comey weaponize federal power against Trump and his supporters, this latest episode confirms what they already suspected about the former FBI directors character and judgment. The text from his own family member, the timing of Patrices Google search, and the tortured evolution of his story all raise the same unavoidable question: Who believes this story?
