Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is once again casting herself as a victim of sexism, this time over public criticism of her decision to broadcast her egg-freezing journey on social media.
The Bronx and Queens Democrat, a prominent member of the far-left Squad and a potential 2028 presidential aspirant, has used her online platforms to lament what she calls a double standard in the scrutiny she receives, according to the New York Post. She recently told her Instagram followers she has no second thoughts about turning an intensely personal medical decision into a political and cultural flashpoint, insisting that the backlash merely proves her point about gender bias in public life.
The answer to that simply is no, Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said on Instagram Saturday when asked if she regretted going public with the process. I was born a woman, period. And I have no control over that, and I wouldnt want to change that.
And the way I feel is, any negativity or judgment that I would receive at any point is negativity that I would receive for being a woman, whether I shared this information or not. So I might as well help others, she added, casting criticism of her highly choreographed disclosures as an inevitable byproduct of her sex rather than a reaction to her own choices.
The progressive lawmaker first revealed on Aug. 8 that she was freezing her eggs and then proceeded to document the experience in a stream of posts, videos, and commentary. She has framed the decision as an effort to inspire and inform other women about fertility options, turning what many consider a private matter into a public narrative aligned with her broader political brand.
Her campaign-style rollout, however, drew sharp pushback from Christian and conservative commentators who argue that the cultural message surrounding egg freezing often encourages women to delay marriage and motherhood in favor of careerism. Those critics contend that this mindset undermines the traditional family structure and leaves many women facing difficult choices later in life that could have been avoided with earlier, family-centered priorities.
Ocasio-Cortez dismissed that line of criticism by accusing her detractors of urging women to lower their standards in relationships. She claimed that such voices were effectively pressuring women to settle for a partner who is a loser, a remark that underscored her tendency to personalize ideological disputes and caricature conservative concerns about family and responsibility.
Her oversharing also reignited speculation about her personal life, particularly her relationship with longtime partner and fianc Riley Roberts. While she has refused to confirm any breakup, sources told The Post that the couple quietly split some time ago, even as many observers initially assumed they were still engaged when she began discussing egg freezing.
The pair became engaged in 2022, but Ocasio-Cortez has appeared in public without her engagement ring for months, fueling questions she has chosen not to answer directly. Instead, she has focused on portraying herself as uniquely targeted, saying, Ever since I was 28-years-old when I first won my primary, largely unexpectedly to the national media, I have been subject to personal scrutiny and dissection ever since.
Its no secret to anyone that its been done in a way that is just simply not something my male colleagues have been subject to, she continued, before adding, I have the privilege of being more resilient to this kind of negativity than someone who hasnt. Her comments suggest that any probing of her personal decisionswhether about relationships or reproductive planningshould be interpreted primarily through the lens of gender politics rather than legitimate public curiosity about a high-profile elected official.
Medically, egg freezing can improve the odds of a successful pregnancy later in life, as egg quality typically declines rapidly in a womans mid-30s. The procedure requires about two weeks of hormone treatments before eggs are harvested, and Ocasio-Cortez began the process during the August recess, when the House is out of session for more than a month, allowing her to turn the break into a media event.
Anyways, long story short, Im a woman. And Im not going to ignore that fact when no one else does, she said, doubling down on a narrative that places identity at the center of every debate.
