House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is openly signaling that Democrats may move to expand and pack the Supreme Court if they regain full control of Washington.
Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists convention, Jeffries denounced the Courts 63 conservative majority as a subsidiary of President Donald Trumps MAGA movement. According to Gateway Pundit, when pressed on how Democrats would respond to the current Court, Jeffries made clear that no structural change is off-limits.
There are a variety of different options that are on the table, and I think we cant foreclose on any single one of them, he said. Among those options is expanding the Supreme Court and creating new seats that a future Democratic president could fill, a move that would fundamentally alter the balance of power in favor of the left.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has already endorsed increasing the number of justices from nine to 13. Jeffries also expressed support for sweeping changes to Senate rules, including abolishing the filibuster, which would allow Democrats to ram through partisan legislation if they controlled the House, Senate, and White House.
The Constitution does not set a fixed number of justices, meaning Congress could expand the Court by statute and allow a sitting president to fill the new vacancies. A group of Democratic senators introduced legislation last month that would formalize term limits and create Supreme Court appointments every two years, further weakening judicial independence.
Even if Democrats capture Congress in November, such legislation would normally require 60 Senate votes to clear the filibuster. President Trump could also veto any court-packing scheme while he remains in office, preserving the current constitutional guardrails.
Trump has repeatedly warned that Democrats intend to scrap the filibuster and remake the Supreme Court once they have the votes. Their number one policy push is the complete and total obliteration of our great United States Supreme Court, Trump warned last year, as Democrats fumed over rulings overturning Roe v. Wade and affirming broad presidential immunity, even as the Court has occasionally ruled against his administration on issues like tariffs and birthright citizenship.
