Speculation is mounting in Washington over who will replace outgoing White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, just one day after she announced she would step down to devote more time to her young family.
According to Western Journal, a White House source told the New York Post that President Donald Trump has not yet settled on a successor and has set no public timetable for naming one. Nonetheless, figures within and close to the administration have already begun circulating a short list of early frontrunners for one of the most visible roles in the federal government.
Alina Habba, the former acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey and a onetime personal attorney to Trump, is widely viewed as a leading contender. Her background as both a prosecutor and a loyal legal defender of the president makes her an appealing choice for an administration that prizes combative, media-savvy advocates.
Breitbart News Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle has also emerged as a prominent name in the early jockeying for the job. Boyle is well-known in Trumps orbit and has covered the president since 2015, giving him years of experience navigating both the conservative media ecosystem and the legacy press that often seeks to undermine the administration.
The report further notes that White House deputy chief of staff for communications and personnel Taylor Budowich is under consideration. Also believed to be in the mix is White House communications director Steven Cheung, a longtime communications operative who has helped shape the administrations aggressive messaging strategy.
Two additional names reportedly being weighed are Katie Miller, the wife of deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller, and principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly. Both women are already embedded in the administrations communications apparatus, which could make for a smoother transition at the podium as the White House continues to battle a hostile press corps and entrenched bureaucracy.
Leavitt stunned many in the political world on Wednesday when she publicly announced her departure in a post on X, expressing deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve. Serving as the White House Press Secretary over the past year and a half has been the honor and adventure of a lifetime, she said, underscoring the significance of the role for a young conservative woman at the highest levels of government.
Leavitt went on to highlight the unique experiences she gained while working at Trumps side. She added, I am incredibly grateful to President Trump for granting me so many extraordinary opportunities, such as working in the West Wing and spending countless hours in the Oval Office, flying around the world and meeting foreign leaders, and traveling across our beautiful country and meeting Americans from all walks of life.
At just 28, Leavitt also made clear that her decision was driven by family considerations rather than political pressure or internal discord. Being a mother and welcoming a new baby while working in one of the most demanding jobs in the world has been the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life, to say the least, she added, offering a rare glimpse into the personal cost of high-level public service.
She explained that the demands of the position were ultimately incompatible with the standard she set for herself as a parent. The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary and that is why I have ultimately made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life.
Leavitt noted that Trump had asked her to remain on as an adviser, and she pledged to continue advocating for him from outside the press room. That ongoing relationship underscores the presidents preference for surrounding himself with trusted loyalists who share his America First priorities and are willing to withstand relentless attacks from the left and the establishment media.
Trump, for his part, publicly praised Leavitts service and her choice to prioritize her family.
