The American lefts socialist wing is enjoying a burst of primary victories, but its radical agenda and cultural disconnect are becoming harder to hide.
According to RedState, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and their allies are basking in newfound prominence even as their own rhetoric exposes just how extreme their program has become. Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) has long argued that the best way to deal with these activists is simply to let them talk, dubbing the strategy Operation Let Them Speak, and recent events suggest he has a point.
DSA National Political Committee member Frances Gill gave an interview that neatly encapsulated the movements worldview, openly embracing ideas such as abolishing police and prisons. She also complained that Americans were effectively promised success if they went to college and were highly educated, insisting that any failure to thrive must be blamed on a system tipped toward the wealthy rather than on personal responsibility or unmarketable degrees.
At the same time, former Vice President Kamala Harris, widely seen as maneuvering for a 2028 presidential bid, has been edging closer to this hard-left faction. She has cozied up to New York Citys socialist mayor and thrown her support behind Abdul El-Sayed, the socialist-backed Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, while urging Democrats to get comfortable with a new level of political ruthlessness.
Sen. Kennedy, a sharp critic of the socialist trend, has not been shy about calling out both the ideology and Harris embrace of it. Socialism is just the equal sharing of misery, he said, before turning his fire on Harris political relevance and judgment.
In a pointed appearance with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Kennedy dismissed Harris future prospects in blunt terms. No disrespect, but Vice President Harris is no longer relevant. She had her shot, and she missed, Kennedy told Sean Hannity, making clear he sees little chance of a Harris comeback in 2028.
Kennedy then delivered the line that instantly lit up conservative media and social platforms, skewering Harris outreach to affluent radicals. She can cozy up to the Lulu Lenins, but she has me confused with someone who cares what she thinks, he said, coining a phrase that fuses luxury athleisure brand Lululemon with Soviet revolutionary Vladimir Lenin.
The Lulu Lenins label captures a growing class of well-off, far-left candidates and activists who posture as tribunes of the working class while living lives far removed from the people they claim to champion. They are, in effect, the latest iteration of champagne socialists, more fluent in boutique brands and academic jargon than in paychecks and payrolls.
Commentators quickly seized on the phrase, noting how neatly it fits the current generation of progressive elites. Its official. Champagne socialism is out. Lulu Leninism is in. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their style, one observer quipped, while another dubbed them the Generational successor to Nieman Marxists and confidently predicted, Its gonna stick.
As President Trumps second administration continues to emphasize law and order, economic growth, and individual responsibility, the contrast with the DSAs abolitionist fantasies and Harris flirtation with ruthlessness could not be starker. With Lulu Leninism now in the political lexicon, voters have a vivid shorthand for a left that talks working-class struggle while sipping lattes in designer leggingsand, as Tom Bevan suggested, that nickname is likely to follow them into every future campaign.
