Establishment Democrats are facing mounting scrutiny amid allegations that party-aligned operatives are leaning on the family of Alani Bankhead to force her out of Montanas high-stakes U.S. Senate race and clear the field for independent candidate Seth Bodnar.
According to Breitbart News, Bodnar, who enjoys the backing of former Democrat Sen. Jon Tester, has been carefully weighing whether to remain in the contest ahead of the August 10 withdrawal deadline, a decision that could reshape one of the most closely watched races in the country. Republican strategists and political operatives told Breitbart News that Bodnars campaign has struggled to gain traction despite spending by both the campaign and an allied super PAC, it added.
Over the weekend, even left-leaning outlets acknowledged the internal Democrat turmoil, with NPR noting that party figures have been scrambling to push Bankhead aside in favor of Bodnar. Bankhead won the state primary, but both voters and some prominent Democrats are pressuring her to drop out of the race to make room for a prominent independent candidate, Seth Bodnar, who has already raised more money than her and Republican Kurt Alme combined, reported NPR. Since 2024, Republicans have held all of Montanas federal seats. On Sunday, Washington Reporter journalist Matthew Foldi revealed what he described as explosive evidence of that effort, posting on X that he had obtained several leaked documents from a dark money group showing how Democrats have an organized harassment campaign targeting Bankheads family to secure her withdrawal from the race. The document is titled: Montana Senate Seat: How to Help. It urges Democrats who have relevant relationships to urge Bankhead to drop out of the race, reported Foldi.
Foldi further detailed the scope of the alleged pressure campaign, noting that it extended well beyond the candidate herself. The document goes on to list Bankheads father, mother, brother, stepdaughter, and friends as targets of the harassment campaign. It includes their names and information about their background, he added.
The leaked materials, if authentic, paint a picture of a party apparatus more concerned with blocking a conservative victory than respecting the democratic process or the privacy of a candidates family. The documents reportedly stress that Democrat operatives fear Bankheads continued presence on the ballot would all but guarantee a straightforward win for Republican Kurt Alme in a three-way race, and they even instruct activists on how to downplay or discard a past sexual discrimination lawsuit against the University of Montana during Bodnars tenure as president.
With August 10 looming as the final day for either Bankhead or Bodnar to exit the race, Montana voters are left to watch whether Democrat power brokers will succeed in sidelining their own nominee in favor of a handpicked independent. For conservatives, the episode reinforces a familiar pattern: a Democrat establishment willing to rely on dark money, backroom pressure, and narrative management rather than trusting voters to choose between a clear Republican alternative and a transparently presented opponent.
