Behind the scenes, Hizzoner huffily badgers critics who dare question him publicly, harbors petty grudges against prominent pols and often only responds to texts when hes miffed about bad press, according to interviews with more than a dozen elected officials, consultants and other politicos. One political consultant observed, I see more and more he cannot handle criticism, but mainly from elected officials who he thinks he can push around.
Those insiders, wary of retaliation, reportedly sought anonymity to avoid crossing a touchy mayor with whom they must deal over matters of governance and politics. Their accounts paint a picture of a progressive figure who, while projecting calm and confidence on social media, behaves like a classic political bully when challenged. The report noted that Mamdani was particularly incensed when Jewish leaders urged him to stop fanning the flames of hatred against Israel following an alleged antisemitic stabbing in the city. He allegedly phoned at least one elected official to complain about being told to tone down his rhetoric, especially angered that the rebuke followed his branding of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal.
Mamdanis sensitivity appears to extend to criticism of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the far-left group with which he is closely aligned. As one of the DSAs most visible officeholders, he reportedly took personal offense when Queens Borough President Donovan Richards posted on X that the DSA was white supremacy, highlighting concerns among some minorities about the organizations priorities and rhetoric. Rather than engaging in open debate, Mamdani allegedly tried to pressure Richards into taking the post down. One City Council member remarked bluntly, Hes so thin-skinned and reads everything.
