Barely a month after being crowned, Miss North Carolina USA Brittany Boltinhouse has been stripped of her title following the emergence of allegedly offensive online posts.
According to Breitbart, the 27-year-old was formally dethroned, a move first highlighted by the New York Post. Miss USA Organization chairman and CEO Thom Brodeur said the decision followed what he called a thorough review of recently surfaced information.
Brodeur declined to detail the specific behavior at issue but asserted that the organization does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity whoever they are. He further stressed that the pageants standards were non-negotiable, reflecting a broader trend of institutions policing speech and conduct well beyond the stage.
The organizations decision was not based on a single incident, according to Brodeur. What was brought to us was not a single moment, he said. It reflected conduct over an extended period of time. That is why this outcome was reached, and I stand behind it without qualification.
Leaders at A Blaize Productions, which managed the Miss North Carolina USA contest, called the move difficult while likewise refusing to specify what Boltinhouse allegedly did. Their silence on the details leaves the public with a punishment but no clear standard, a pattern conservatives warn can chill free expression and due process.
Boltinhouse has not yet commented on her removal, though Brodeur said her statement will be released publicly in due course. She has been described as, a proud Latina woman with Honduran roots, entrepreneur, and community advocate, raising further questions about how accusations of bias are being applied and who ultimately decides which views are beyond the pale.
