With one Homeland Security secretary already having been forced out of President Donald Trumps White House in 2026, a new round of internal strife now threatens his successor, Markwayne Mullin.
According to Mediaite, a Politico Playbook report indicates that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mullin is confronting a growing backlash not only from prominent MAGA-aligned commentators, but also from officials inside the administration itself. It takes a lot to unite this administration around a cohesive point of view, an unnamed senior administration official told Politico. Mullin deserves credit where credit is due. Everyone agrees he sucks donkey butt.
The immediate flashpoint was Mullins appearance at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Oklahoma City, where his remarks on immigration policy stirred anger among conservatives who expected a tougher stance. His comments on amnesty and work visas were quickly interpreted by many on the right as a retreat from the strong enforcement posture that helped propel President Trump back into office.
If were looking to grow our economy, we need more permanent solutions on [work visas], because this narrative that it steals American jobs is true in some industries, its not true for all industries, Mullin said. He added, It is America. We want to take care of Americans first. Its our economy, its our homeland, but theres a way to utilize labor where were not having the participation rate we need to, and we can plug those holes.
Those remarks were seized upon by immigration hardliners who view any talk of expanded legal pathways as a slippery slope toward amnesty and weakened border sovereignty. Mullin is the wrong guy at the wrong time for the wrong job a time when we need focus on mass deportations, we get an amnesty advocate, Steve Bannon told Politico.
Recognizing the political damage, Mullin moved quickly to clarify his position on X, attempting to reassure the conservative base that he remains committed to strict enforcement. NO amnesty for illegal aliens, Mullin wrote. Ever. We are a nation of laws. If you are illegally present in the United States of America you will be detained and deported. Period.
Compounding the unrest, Mullins cordial demeanor toward high-profile Democrats has raised additional suspicions among grassroots conservatives who expect clear partisan contrast on core issues like border security. His friendly interaction with Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) at the governors gathering drew criticism in MAGA circles, where bipartisanship with the left is often seen as a warning sign rather than a virtue.
Politico further reported that Mullin maintains a surprisingly chummy relationship with Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), another prominent Democrat, reinforcing the perception that he is too eager to please political opponents. Yet despite the ideological grumbling, enforcement metrics tell a different story, with removals, arrests, and detention numbers all reportedly rising under Mullins leadership.
