Bill Maher jolted his studio audience into an uneasy hush as he tore into Democratic socialists and their growing influence inside the Democratic Party, bluntly branding them communists and warning that his own vote is now in play."
According to Mediaite, Maher used the new rule segment of his HBO program to argue that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are no longer even attempting to conceal their radical ideology. And finally, new rule, [President] Donald Trump has told one trillion lies, but when he says the Democratic Socialists of America are actually communist, thats not one of them. And its not hard to prove it, just by quoting the DSA and their candidates. It gives me no pleasure to have to do this, Maher said, making clear that his criticism came from within the Democratic fold, not from the right. He underscored that the partys lurch toward the far left has become so extreme that his support can no longer be taken for granted, warning that his vote is in play because of how far left hes seen his party go.
Maher then singled out some of the movements most visible figures, including leftist influencer Hasan Piker, New York City Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (D), and Mamdani aide Cea Weaver, as emblematic of a deeper ideological problem. Maher said: Not to leave any doubt, New York Mayor Mamdani once tweeted Karl Marxs words exactly. Theyre not trying to hide it.
Turning to Piker, Maher highlighted the pundits open nostalgia for communist regimes that inflicted mass suffering and death. Their most popular influencer, Hasan Piker, thinks communism is so groovy. He laments the fall of the two of the most murderous regimes in history, the Soviet Union and Chairman Maos China, Maher said, underscoring how casually some on the left romanticize totalitarian systems that crushed basic freedoms.
Maher reserved some of his sharpest criticism for Weaver, portraying her rhetoric as a direct threat to the American middle class and private property rights. Mamdanis aide, his top aide, Cea Weaver said, if you dont believe in the governments sacred right to seize property, its over and impoverish the white middle class. What? Thats a goal? You know youre supposed to scare people into voting you, right? he recounted, before driving home the point: Maher added, Thats communism, which we tried and it doesnt work.
He went on to argue that the DSA itself has undergone a radical transformation, openly embracing Marxist doctrine rather than distancing itself from it. He said: The DSA itself has switched. Even five years ago, it shunned communists. That changed. Things change. Now the coalition within the DSA, called the Marxist Unity Group, is in ascendance. And I must take them at their word, when their words include, our commitment is to the long-term struggle for a fully liberated, classless society in a word, communism. What do they have to do? Tweet out, elect more communists? Oh yeah, see, Cea Weaver did that.
As the audience reacted with stunned silence to the explicit references and quotes, Maher seized on the moment to emphasize the gravity of what he was describing. As the audience fell silent, Maher said, Yes. Good, Im glad youre shocked. He reiterated that his ballot is not guaranteed to Democrats who flirt with or excuse anti-American ideologies, declaring, Yes, my vote is in play. Im not voting for anyone who thinks the wrong side won the Cold War or cheers for the Intifada like its the World Cup, a line that underscored a broader unease many voters feel about a party increasingly tolerant of hard-left extremism in an era when President Trumps second administration has re-centered debate on patriotism, prosperity, and the failures of socialism.
