Jay Clayton has been narrowly confirmed by the US Senate as Director of National Intelligence in a 5147 vote, solidifying President Donald Trumps continued influence over the nations security apparatus.
According to The Post Millennial, Clayton, who previously chaired the Securities and Exchange Commission during the first Trump administration, was swiftly congratulated by the President. "Congratulations to the Great Jay Clayton on his confirmation by the United States Senate, to be the next Director of National Intelligence. Jay is outstanding in every way, and will do a spectacular job as Director!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Clayton steps into the role following the resignation of former DNI Tulsi Gabbard, who left the post after her husband was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. Her departure led to the temporary appointment of acting DNI and Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte, who moved quickly to trim the Office of the Director of National Intelligence with multiple rounds of layoffs.
Pultes cost-cutting tenure alarmed Democrats, who demanded a replacement amid fears he would dismantle the agency and weaken the bureaucracy they have long relied upon. Despite their objections, the final confirmation vote for Clayton fell strictly along party lines, with Republicans backing the nominee and Democrats decrying what they called a politicized process.
"As Senate Republicans move to once again confirm an inexperienced and unqualified nominee to a position of massive national security consequence for years to come, one thing remains clear this type of politicized leadership will only make Americans less safe," Democrat Senator Adam Schiff complained in a statement on Clayton's confirmation. FBI Director Kash Patel, who will now work closely with Clayton, offered a starkly different assessment, posting on X, "Congrats to Jay Clayton on confirmation - outstanding pick from President Trump to lead ODNI."
