Dr. Chris Fall, the director of the Commerce Departments safety-focused artificial intelligence office, has stepped down after barely three months in the role, according to two sources who spoke with the Daily Signal.
As reported by WND, Fall, who previously served in the first Trump administration as director of the Office of Science at the Department of Energy, was appointed in late April to lead the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI). The Trump administration had initially selected Collin Burns, a former researcher at Anthropic and OpenAI, to head CAISI, but while Burns was still in the onboarding process, the Commerce Department shifted course and installed Fall instead, the Daily Signal noted.
Following Chriss departure, NIST Director Dr. Arvind Raman will continue to oversee CAISI and will serve as Acting CAISI Director, a Commerce Department spokesperson told the Daily Signal. The leadership shake-up follows a brief but telling clash between the Commerce Department and Anthropic over export controls on the companys latest AI models, imposed due to fears about offensive cyber capabilities. The agency reversed itself roughly two weeks later, lifting the restrictions after additional review.
Anthropic, for its part, insisted that its systems had already undergone rigorous scrutiny by the very office now left without a permanent director. The company said researchers from CAISI had tested both our prior and new safeguards and agree that they are extraordinarily strong, a claim that underscores the stakes of who ultimately sets and enforces AI standards in Washington.
