James Talarico is working overtime to rebrand himself as a palatable statewide contender in Texas, but his record of radical rhetoric and progressive posturing continues to haunt him where it matters most.
According to RedState, Democrats themselves are openly questioning whether Talarico can secure the support of Black voters, a critical bloc for any Democrat hoping to compete in Texas. The tension stems in large part from the bruising primary fight with Rep. Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), which ended without anything resembling party unity, and from Crocketts evident irritation at the notion that she should now campaign enthusiastically on his behalf.
In June, Crockett offered a blunt assessment of Talaricos standing with Black Texans, remarking, Ive not heard a bunch of kumbaya. People dont seem to be convinced at this point." That kind of candor from a prominent Democrat underscores a deeper unease that cannot be spun away by consultants or campaign ads.
Some Black voters are plainly dissatisfied with Talarico, and they are not hiding it. Veteran Democratic strategist Ashley Etienne, a former adviser to President Barack Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris, conceded that Black voters are "feeling like they were betrayed" by "what happened to Jasmine Crockett."
Etienne nevertheless insists that, despite Talaricos long trail of controversial statements, he is "incredibly well positioned" to become the first Democrat in decades to flip a Texas Senate seat. That optimism, however, collides with the reality that a Democrat cannot win statewide in Texas while alienating a core part of the partys own base.
The simmering frustration boiled over during a Houston town hall over the weekend that quickly went viral. Kayla Guo of the Texas Tribune described a "supportive, but hostile environment," as attendees repeatedly pressed Talarico on his outreach to Black voters.
Guo reported that one attendee shouted, "This is why Black Texans dont trust you, after Talaricos staff announced there was only time for one more question. That single outburst captured the broader distrust that has been building since the primary and that Talarico has yet to meaningfully address.
The most striking moment came when a woman in the crowd confronted him directly, declaring, "You stay here, you answer our questions, or you suffer the consequences!" A man nearby chimed in, "Say it with your chest," urging her on as the room grew more tense.
Talarico attempted to defuse the situation with a polite response, telling her, "I appreciate you coming here." The woman was unmoved, firing back, "I did it for my people, not for you!" drawing audible reaction from the audience and underscoring just how little goodwill he enjoys among some of the very voters he needs.
For Republicans, especially in President Trumps second administration, these scenes highlight an opening to define Talarico as too extreme and too untrustworthy for Texas, rather than assuming his radical record speaks for itself. With Real Clear Politics showing Attorney General Ken Paxton holding only a narrow +0.6 lead, even modest erosion in Democratic enthusiasmparticularly among Black voterscould prove decisive in a race where every vote, and every misstep, carries outsized weight.
