New York Citys radical leadership is once again flirting with lawlessness, this time with Mayor Zohran Mamdani musing about having Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested during his next visit to the city.
According to Gateway Pundit, Mamdani has floated the idea of detaining Netanyahu if the Israeli leader comes to New York for the United Nations General Assembly this fall. The notion plays directly to the hard-Left, anti-Israel base that now dominates much of the Democratic Socialist movement and treats Free Palestine! sloganeering as a substitute for serious foreign policy.
The proposal is not merely inflammatory; it is a legal absurdity that suggests Mamdani views New York City as a sovereign entity, unbound by federal authority or international norms. To be clear, Zohran Mamdani, as the mayor of New York City, has absolutely ZERO authority to arrest Netanyahu, a sitting head of government of a close American ally.
Even within the Biden-era diplomatic establishment, there is recognition that Mamdanis posturing is pure fantasy. Americas ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, has already dismissed the idea as a non-starter and exposed it for what it is: political theater.
New York is preparing to host world leaders for the upcoming U.N. General Assembly, a role that requires stability, not stunt politics. Yet Mamdani, in a recent interview with a New York Times reporter, boasted that he is clinging to a deeply-held wish and campaign promise to see Netanyahu arrested when he sets foot in the city.
The First Amendment protects Mamdanis right to indulge in such rhetoric, but it does not transform his fantasies into law. As one conservative commentator put it, Well, we do still have the First Amendment, so I say let him talk, because his own words reveal the emptiness of his threats.

Mamdanis posture underscores a broader problem on the far Left, where local officials increasingly behave as if they can nullify federal law whenever it conflicts with their ideological agenda. Mamdani really thinks he is the ruler of a separate country, and if his rhetoric continues on this trajectory, it may only be a matter of time before he comes right out and admits it.
