CNN anchor Abby Phillip has sparked fresh controversy by claiming Republicans are rallying to Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clarks defense primarily because she is white, injecting race into what many see as a straightforward issue of player safety and equal treatment.
During a segment of CNNs Table for Five, Phillip and her panel dissected a letter from 11 Republican lawmakers to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, demanding action over what they described as repeated, racially motivated attacks against Clark; according to Breitbart, the lawmakers warned that the leagues inaction could carry legal consequences.
Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX), who led the effort, cautioned the WNBA that if it continued to allow what he called the violent targeting of Clark, the league could face investigations by the Justice Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over potential civil rights violations.
Sports broadcaster Cari Champion brushed aside the lawmakers concerns, suggesting they neither grasp the nature of the sport nor the leagues culture. I think its really, really disrespectful, Champion said, insisting that the physical play Clark has endured is a rite of passage in the WNBA and rejecting the idea that players are targeting Clark because of her race.
Phillip, for her part, conceded Clarks star power but questioned why Republicans have elevated her treatment into a political flashpoint.
The problem with Caitlin Clark is that she is a superstar. Shes great at what she does. However, the attention that shes getting from Republicans and from government seems to be exclusively because she is white.
Many users on X pushed back on that framing and applauded Pfluger for stepping in, arguing that Clark has been singled out despite almost single-handedly supercharging the leagues visibility and revenue.
Thank you, sir! It takes a Texan to make this happen, one user wrote, capturing the sentiment of conservatives who believe elected officials should not ignore potential civil rights concerns simply because they arise in professional sports.
Another user highlighted Clarks economic impact on the league while condemning the hostility she has faced from some fellow players.
Thank you so much. I dont understand the hate her colleagues show towards her. She has transformed the WNBA. More fans than ever have bought tickets, league merchandise, not to mention the trickle down sales for the venues from arenas, concession, overnight stays. Its a shame! the user wrote, underscoring a free-market argument that a player driving unprecedented growth deserves protection, not derision.
Critics of Pflugers move, however, argued that Congress should prioritize other matters and leave the WNBA to manage its own affairs as a private entity. Im a huge CC fan and would love to see the WNBA get better overall. However, this doesnt seem like a congressional attention item, one user said, adding, The WNBA is a private business. To the extent there is a labor, or protected class issue, seems best to let agencies handle. Otherwise this seems like the social media click baiting, fake outage, hyberbole that make things worse not better.
Others went further, urging lawmakers to focus on broader national issues aligned with President Trumps agenda rather than disputes within a professional sports league. Pass the Save America Act. This is a waste of your time and our tax payer dollars, another commented, reflecting a strain of conservative thought that, while sympathetic to Clark, still insists that Congress reserve its direct involvement for matters of clear constitutional and national significance.
