The nations most famous eating spectacle returned to Coney Island this Independence Day weekend, and once again Joey Chestnut left no doubt about who dominates Americas most unapologetically patriotic sport.
According to The Post Millennial, the annual Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest drew an estimated 25,000 spectators to the Coney Island boardwalk on Saturday, where Chestnut, 41, devoured 66 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The performance earned him his 18th Mustard Belt and a $10,000 prize, further cementing his status as a uniquely American champion in an era when traditional celebrations and national pride are too often dismissed by cultural elites.
The contest, a staple of Fourth of July festivities in New York, attracted large crowds early in the day as families and fans gathered to celebrate both competition and country. One attendee, 19-year-old Virginia Military Institute student Thomas Leible, reflected the reverence many hold for Chestnut, saying, Ive been watching this since I was a little kid, and knowing that Joey Chestnut is the greatest of all time, and who knows when hes going to retire?
Leible went further, placing Chestnuts dominance above that of some of the most celebrated figures in modern sports. I mean, theres nobody as dominant as him in any athletic event ever. I mean if you look back at somebody like Tom Brady whos not even close and doesnt have nearly half the records he has.
While Chestnuts total fell short of his own staggering record of 76 hot dogs, set in 2021, he still finished comfortably ahead of the competition. Speaking beforehand on Good Morning America, he projected confidence and enthusiasm, saying, Im hungry, and its a beautiful day. This is going to be a great Fourth of July, and adding, Im feeling good.
The mens field featured strong challengers, but none could match Chestnuts pace or presence on the big stage. Patrick Bertoletti, 41, of Blue Island, Illinois, finished second with 50 hot dogs and earned $5,000, while Australias James Webb, 37, took third with 48 hot dogs and a $2,500 payout.
Chestnut has leaned into the patriotic symbolism of the event, describing competitive eating this week on social media as the most patriotic sport weve got. Fans echoed that sentiment online, with one calling him an American treasure and another urging, Joey gotta get a record for the 250.
The womens contest earlier in the day underscored the enduring appeal of this all-American tradition, as Miki Sudo once again claimed the title. She consumed 38.75 hot dogs to secure her 12th championship belt, reinforcing a dynasty of her own.
Chestnuts latest triumph comes after a turbulent year away from the table, a reminder that even larger-than-life figures face personal struggles. In April, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from a bar incident in which he struck a man with an open hand; court records noted he was pretty drunk and didnt remember parts of the altercation, and he was reportedly still on probation at the time of the contest.
He also missed the 2024 Nathans event after being barred over a sponsorship deal with plant-based brand Impossible Foods, a dispute that opened the door for Bertolettis 58-hot-dog victory that year. With President Trumps second administration presiding over a renewed emphasis on American tradition and national pride, Chestnuts return to the Coney Island stageand his emphatic winresonates with many who see in him not perfection, but perseverance, patriotism, and a distinctly American refusal to back down.
