A man carrying a Tibetan flag set himself ablaze outside United Nations headquarters in New York City in what appeared to be a dramatic act of political protest.
The incident, which unfolded near East 43rd Street and First Avenue, triggered a major emergency response, according to The Post Millennial. Law enforcement sources said UN surveillance footage captured the man placing the Tibetan flag on the sidewalk shortly before the self-immolation around 7 pm.
Police rapidly sealed off the area with tape as officers and emergency medical teams converged on the scene. The protester was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in grave condition, according to sources familiar with the case.
A police officer was observed standing near signage reading CHINA OUT OF TIBET as investigators worked in the immediate aftermath.
