Columbus, Ohio, is under fire after a city department promoted plans to raise the Somali flag over City Hall in honor of Somali Independence Day, sparking outrage from residents and national commentators who see the move as a slight to American sovereignty.
According to Gateway Pundit, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department posted on X, Happy Somali Independence Day! and added, As we celebrate the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic in 1960, City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia. The post was quickly deleted after criticism mounted, but not before screenshots circulated widely among conservatives who questioned why an American city hall would elevate a foreign flag.
Former DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin reposted the message and demanded, What on earth are you doing @MayorGinther? This is Ohio. This is America. She later underscored the symbolism, writing, Ohios capital city hoisting the flag of a foreign nation, and, Posted and now deleted by @ColsRecParks.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller weighed in, declaring, Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America 250. Attorney and political commentator Mehek Cooke added a blunt rebuke of the citys priorities, stating, City Hall is not a foreign embassy.
Cooke continued, As an Ohioan, I am repulsed by the anti-Americanism here. Our leaders treat foreign nationalism as sacred while treating American patriotism as controversial. Americas public buildings should honor America. Her comments echoed a broader conservative concern that local officials are more eager to showcase global causes than to unapologetically celebrate the American flag and national heritage.
Following the uproar, a city spokesperson responded to Fox News Digital, attempting to walk back the controversy. A social media post created by a city department falsely stated that City Hall would raise the Somalian flag in recognition of Somali Independence Day. While the City recognizes and respects the aspirations of people around the world to live in freedom, this post was inaccurate and has been deleted, the spokesperson said, leaving many residents still questioning why such a proposal appeared on an official account in the first place.
