The latest violent attack on WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark has intensified public outrage over what many see as a pattern of targeted abuse against the leagues most valuable draw.
The incident unfolded during the Phoenix Mercurys 111-109 victory over the Indiana Fever in Indianapolis, where a routine scramble for a loose ball turned into something far more sinister, according to Western Journal. During the second quarter, Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas collapsed on Clark, drove her knee into the Fever stars groin area, and rammed her fist into Clarks throat, a sequence that left viewers stunned and raised serious questions about player safety and league priorities.
Clark, who has almost single-handedly elevated interest in womens basketball and brought unprecedented ratings to the WNBA, exited the game in the third quarter with a back injury after posting an impressive 19 points and eight assists. Thomas was later handed a one-game suspension for the flagrant foul, a penalty widely derided as a slap on the wrist given the severity of the contact and the risk of serious injury.
The combination of the brutal play and the minimal punishment sparked immediate backlash across social media, especially from conservatives who see a deeper cultural and racial double standard at work. Conservative influencer Robby Starbuck condemned the league for turning a blind eye to the repeated hard fouls on Clark, whose success has financially benefited the very players and executives now standing by in silence.
At some point Caitlyn Clark has to stand up for herself and call out the racism involved, Starbuck wrote on X. If she was a black star boosting everyones paycheck, theyd be treating her like a queen. Instead, because shes white, shes targeted with assaults on the court and insults off the court.
Rep. Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee, highlighted how close Clark came to a catastrophic injury, echoing concerns that the WNBAs permissive attitude is courting disaster. Caitlin Clark is treated like this because she is white, one X user underscored. And the WNBA is enabling it.
Another commentator noted the self-defeating nature of the hostility toward Clark, arguing that her jealous rivals are too shortsighted to recognize that if their rough tactics succeed in sidelining her, the leagues newfound audience will vanish. Never has a photo so completely encapsulated the total and complete failure of the @WNBAs leadership, the X user remarked. Never in the history of sports has a golden goose been so deliberately squandered.
Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White, hardly a partisan firebrand, also blasted WNBA officials for allowing the escalating cheap shots on the leagues marquee player. We have a generational talent and WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots [against her] right there that werent called, White told ESPN. Absolutely unacceptable.
White went further, calling out what she described as a glaring officiating double standard that leaves Clark uniquely exposed to abuse. We spent all offseason looking at officiating, and I still say the one thing that we keep asking for is consistency, she said. [Clark] is not called the same way as everybody else is called.
The fist in the throat is crazy. Its crazy. Its dangerous, White continued. When you have these things continue to happen time and time and time again, eventually it gets frustrating. As President Trumps second administration continues to champion law and order and equal treatment under the rules, the WNBAs handling of its brightest star has become a stark example of what happens when leadership caves to ideological narratives instead of enforcing basic standards of fairness, safety, and respect for the very athlete keeping the league afloat.
