ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, after a week-long public spat with President Donald Trump, has now conceded that Trump represents an upgrade over Joe Biden.
Smiths admission came during a Sunday interview with CNN host Kasie Hunt, marking a notable shift from his earlier rhetoric. According to Western Journal, the dispute began when Smith publicly blamed Trump in advance if the New York Knicks were to lose Game 3 of the NBA Finals to the San Antonio Spurs.
The outspoken host, who has openly mused about a future in politics, claimed that Trumps presence at Madison Square Garden had disrupted the Knicks energy after the team dropped that game. Trump, never one to ignore a public jab, responded by labeling Smith a nice guy while casting doubt on his mental acuity.
You need a certain aptitude to run for president. You need a high IQ. Im not sure Stephen has that. I dont think he does, actually, Trump said, in a characteristic counterpunch that underscored his confidence and willingness to challenge media figures. With the Knicks ultimately winning the NBA Finals in five games, the sports-related aspect of the feud faded, but the political implications lingered.
During his appearance with Hunt, Smith attempted to walk a fine line, criticizing Trumps judgment while still acknowledging his superiority to Biden. Well, I dont know anybody that would associate the word sharp with [Trump] because he doesnt seem that sharp with some of the decisions that he makes sometimes, to be quite honest with you, Smith said.
But Im not here to denigrate or insult the president of the United States in that regard. He then conceded what many voters concerned about Bidens fitness have long observed, adding, He is certainly an upgrade from what we were seeing from Joe Biden in terms of his alertness and what have you.
Smith also pushed back against Trumps criticism of his intelligence and issued a direct challenge. When he wants to sit up there and question my IQ and talk to me about people that would smoke me in a debate, well, why dont you do it yourself? Smith said, signaling he would welcome a one-on-one debate with Trump.
For conservatives, Smiths reluctant acknowledgment of Trumps comparative alertness underscores a broader reality that even media personalities on the left are finding difficult to ignore. While Smith may bristle at Trumps barbs, his admission that Trump is an upgrade over Biden reinforces ongoing concerns about Bidens capacity to lead and highlights why many Americans continue to gravitate toward Trumps more vigorous and assertive style of leadership.
