Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin sharply rebuked New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Fox News, declaring he has zero respect for the left-wing city leader and vowing that federal immigration law will be enforced regardless of local resistance.
According to Breitbart, Mullins comments came during an appearance on Fox News Channels America Reports, where co-anchor John Roberts pressed him on reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) may deploy additional agents to New York due to state and city officials refusal to cooperate with federal authorities. Roberts noted that because of the intransigence of New York State and New York City officials cooperating with ICE, that ICE may surge agents into the New York area to apprehend people who are in this country illegally, and pointed out that New York City Mayor Mamdani is coming up against it.
He then played a recent statement from Mamdani, who insisted, We have heard time and again threats of increases in immigration enforcement across our city. I want to be very clear about the fact that I believe that ICE raids are cruel. They are inhumane, they do nothing to serve the interests of public safety.
Roberts contrasted Mamdanis rhetoric with the assessment of Tom Homan, President Trumps border czar, telling Mullin, We were talking to Tom Homan, the border czar, earlier this week and he said the fact that New York is not cooperating with ICE is endangering the public. He then asked the secretary directly, What do you say to the mayor? Mullin did not mince words, responding, He absolutely correct. First of all, Mamdani is a socialist communist that I have zero respect for.
Mullin accused the mayor of presiding over chaos rather than governance, arguing, Hes running a great city by allowing lawless activity to continue to run rampant on the streets. He tied the administrations approach directly to President Trumps campaign promises, stating, President Trump ran on the fact that hes going to restore law back in American cities, even in sanctuary cities.
The secretary emphasized that federal enforcement would not be dictated by partisan boundaries or local sanctuary policies, stressing, I have said this multiple times. I dont care if its a red state or a blue state. He continued, Were going to protect the homeland and what happens in these sanctuary cities, like what Mamdani is running, is that the criminals go to the safe haven in New York City, but they disperse throughout other parts of the city or the state and other parts of the country and continue this criminal activity.
Mullin framed New York as a hub from which criminal elements spread, justifying a targeted federal response, saying, So were are going to go where the heart of the crime is. He invoked President Trumps frequent appeal to the law-abiding majority, noting, Listen, 98% of the American people President Trump states this fact all the time 98% of the American people are law abiding citizens.
According to Mullin, the real threat comes from a small but destructive minority that flourishes under permissive, progressive policies, adding, Its the 2% that runs rampant and destroys our cities and our towns and our communities. He concluded with a blunt warning to sanctuary city leaders, declaring, And what were doing is we are going after the worst of the worst no matter where theyre at and thats including in New York and Mamdani cant do a thing about it because were going to enforce laws, not pick and choose which laws we are going to enforce like he chooses.
