Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) signaled that he has no intention of supporting Todd Blanche for Attorney General, underscoring once again how far Washington has drifted from even a basic standard of bipartisan cooperation.
Speaking on CNNs The Arena, Fetterman lamented the loss of cross-party comity that once allowed nominees to receive fair consideration, noting that it wasnt that long ago that it was very normal for members of the opposite party would vote for their nominees and that such votes really wasnt scandalous or outrageous, according to Breitbart. He pointed out that he has backed some of President Joe Bidens nominees and been able to work together on them, calling that record really productive right now, but insisted Blanche is different, saying, with him, I dont believe thats someone that I could support.
Fetterman claimed everyone was collectively horrified by, like that slush fund or whatever you want to call like that, 1776 fund, whatever, adding, I didnt even encounter anyone on the other side that even thought that was a great idea. He then invoked a familiar Democrat talking point aimed at President Donald Trumps orbit, declaring, overall, I mean, the attorney general is never, ever the presidents personal attorney, framing that as my concern while conceding its really not shocking that me, that I wouldnt vote for him.
The Pennsylvania senator said he expects Blanche to be confirmed on a party-line basis, remarking, Now, I suspect hell have enough votes just on the Republican side, but added, I would be surprised if there is a Democrat thats going to vote for him at this point. Stressing that his opposition is not rooted in alleged criminality, he said, its not, like, a personal thing. Im not implying that hes breaking the laws or hes [inaudible], but its just not someone that he wouldnt be my choice, and thats where Ive been, a stance that highlights how Democrats continue to resist President Trumps efforts to install officials who share his commitment to challenging the entrenched bureaucracy.
