Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) escalated his rhetoric against President Donald Trump on Tuesday, alleging without evidence that a planned White House ballroom reflects a desire to entrench his family in power.
According to Breitbart, Murphy used his appearance on MSNBCs Deadline to frame President Trumps tenure as an existential threat to the republic, despite voters having just exercised their constitutional choice at the ballot box. The Connecticut Democrat claimed that People in this country arent ready to give up on democracy. They think its broken and corrupted, but theyre not ready to give up. And so if we tell them that its at risk, people will actually show up. And thats exactly what has happened over the last year and a half.
Murphy argued that Democrats must continue to stoke alarm about the stakes, insisting, I think we have to level with people about what the stakes are. I mean, make no mistake, he hes building that ballroom because he doesnt think hes going anywhere. You know, even if he may not run for another term, he thinks his family is going to still be in charge. He offered no proof for the assertion, instead leaning on the familiar narrative that President Trumps exercise of lawful executive authority is inherently anti-democratic.
The senator went further, charging that President Trump thinks hes building, a monarchical structure in which he and his family and his cronies never leave the White House. And so, yes, if we dont stand up for our democracy, if we dont win this November, he is going to feel empowered and emboldened. Murphy warned that There going to be more people who are scared of him, more institutions in this country who will fold, and it might be the end of our democracy. But thats not where were heading right now.
Attempting to temper his own doomsday scenario, Murphy contended that the system is holding, saying, Were heading on a path to actually have a free and fair election. We have defended most of his attempts to try to rig the rules. More citizens are involved than ever before. Theyre making horrible mistakes. And so, as alarmist as I have been, I am optimistic. His remarks reflect a broader Democrat strategy of portraying routine policy disputes and constitutional governance under President Trump as a crisis, even as Americans continue to participate robustly in elections and civic life.
