Democrats sparked a fresh round of ridicule after the partys official social media account issued a glowing tribute to late-night host Stephen Colbert just as his television career at CBS came to an ignominious end.
According to Breitbart News, the Democratic Partys account posted a photo collage of Colbert alongside Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, and Kamala Harris, gushing, Thank you, Stephen Colbert. The timing and tone of the message underscored what conservatives have long argued: Colberts show functioned less as entertainment and more as a taxpayer-adjacent infomercial for the left, a perception that did nothing to broaden his appeal beyond a narrow progressive base.
Critics quickly seized on the post as proof that Democrats viewed Colbert not as a comedian, but as a partisan asset whose nightly monologues served the partys messaging machine. Former Trump White House press secretary Sean Spicer wrote, I want to personally thank Brian making it crystal clear why this show as a money pit and only existed to promote Left wing causes and candidates.
Other users echoed that sentiment, questioning why a political party would publicly mourn the end of a late-night program if it were truly just about comedy. Thank you for what? For being an activist for the Democratic Party? one user asked, adding, I guess he deserved this.
Republican strategist Matt Whitlock offered a dry assessment of the situation, highlighting how the shows collapse confirmed what many viewers already suspected. Dang, I cant believe people thought this show was more about politics than entertainment, he mused, underscoring the extent to which Colberts brand had become synonymous with progressive activism rather than broad-based humor.
X user Sonny went further, calling out the unusual spectacle of a major political party publicly grieving a late-night host whose program routinely boosted its candidates. Totally normal late night comedy program where a political party is mourning its loss by posting photos of all of the candidates the late night comedy program promoted for free, Sonny wrote, capturing the sense of partisan symbiosis that defined Colberts tenure.
The most pointed reaction came from President Donald Trump, who has long been a target of Colberts on-air barbs and off-air contempt.
Colbert is finally finished at CBS. Amazing that he lasted so long! No talent, no ratings, no life. He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness hes finally gone! the president wrote on Truth Social.
As Breitbart News reported, Colberts final, basement-rated episode featured Paul McCartney as a guest, with cameos from Bryan Cranston, Tim Meadows, Paul Rudd, and Tig Notaro. If youre just tuning into the Late Show, youve missed a lot, Colbert told the audience, noting it was the last broadcast from the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York and acknowledging the shows dismal standing with viewers.
CBS had already pulled the plug on Colbert and his entire operation last July, just days after he joked about Paramount paying President Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit while the company sought federal approval for a critical merger. Colbert denounced his parent companys agreement with the president as a big, fat bribe for the Skydance merger, while the network insisted the decision to end his show was purely for financial reasons, as Breitbart News reported.
For many conservatives, the Democrats fawning farewell only confirmed what the ratings and the rhetoric had long suggested: Colberts Late Show died as it lived, a partisan megaphone masquerading as mainstream entertainment. With CBS moving on and viewers having already tuned out, the partys public lament over his departure served less as a tribute to comedy than as an inadvertent confession of just how politically valuable that megaphone had been.
