Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has overwhelmingly secured the Republican nomination for governor of Alabama, cementing his status as the prohibitive favorite heading into November
With votes still being counted, Tuberville holds roughly 88 percent of the vote, a landslide that left businessman and political gadfly Ken McFeeters and self-described businessman and entrepreneur Will Santivasci far behind. According to RedState, Decision Desk HQ called the race early in the evening, projecting that Tommy Tuberville wins the Alabama Governor Republican Primary at 8:44 p.m. EDT.
Tuberville announced his bid for the governorship in 2025, immediately transforming the race with his high profile and deep roots in the state. A former and beloved head coach at Auburn University from 1999 to 2008, he entered the contest with broad name recognition and goodwill that most politicians can only dream of.
That popularity was reinforced by his record in Washington as a senator who has consistently presented himself as willing to stand up and fight for what he believes in, as well as the people of Alabama. Coupled with his formidable fundraising operation, it quickly became apparent that Tuberville would be, as observers noted, a shoo-in for the Republican nomination in a state that has steadily rejected progressive governance.
A key pillar of Tubervilles strength has been his unwavering loyalty to President Donald Trump, a stance that has resonated with Alabamas conservative base. It was therefore expected, and politically potent, when the President weighed in with a full-throated endorsement, declaring: Highly Respected Senator, Coach Tommy Tuberville, is running for Governor of Alabama, a place I love and WON BIG, six times, including Primaries, in 2016, 2020, and 2024! A former SEC Championship winning College Football Coach, and now, as a Highly Respected U.S. Senator,.
McFeeters attempted to derail Tubervilles campaign through the courts, filing a lawsuit in March to remove him from the ballot on the grounds that he allegedly failed to meet Alabamas residency requirements. That effort collapsed on Monday when a district court judge dismissed the case, clearing the final procedural hurdle to Tubervilles nomination.
Tuberville will now face a familiar adversary in the general election: Democrat Doug Jones, the former senator he defeated in 2020, denying Jones a second term in the U.S. Senate. Voters will soon decide whether Tuberville will once again block Joness ambitions, this time by preventing him from capturing the Alabama governorship and keeping the state firmly in conservative hands.
