Watch: ICE Officers Attacked After Nigerian Visa Overstayer Allegedly Turns Car Into Weapon

A violent confrontation erupted outside a Brooklyn hospital on Sunday evening after federal immigration officers took a Nigerian national with a criminal record into custody, drawing an estimated 200 anti-ICE agitators who clashed with New York City police.

According to The Post Millennial, the incident began when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers moved to detain Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian citizen who had overstayed a tourist visa in 2023 and was in the country illegally. Okeke had previously been arrested on charges of assault and criminal drug possession, underscoring the public-safety concerns conservatives have long raised about lax immigration enforcement in so-called sanctuary jurisdictions.

Federal officials said the situation escalated when officers attempted to take Okeke into custody and he allegedly turned his vehicle into a weapon. "During his arrest, Okeke refused to comply with officers lawful commands to exit the vehicle and weaponized his vehicle to attempt to hit ICE officers. Okeke became physically combative attempting to punch and elbow ICE officers. Our officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest," DHS said in a post to X.

After his arrest on Saturday, Okeke requested medical treatment and was transported by ICE officers to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyns Bushwick neighborhood. The illegal immigrant was admitted for evaluation, but doctors later determined he was medically fit for discharge and cleared him to leave with federal agents.

DHS said Okeke continued to resist even inside the hospital, disrupting staff and officers alike. "After his arrest, Okeke requested medical assistance, so ICE officers escorted him to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for a medical evaluation. Okeke remained non-compliant during the medical evaluation throwing himself to the floor and screaming. The medical staff cleared him," DHS added.

As the medical evaluation unfolded, left-wing activists converged on the hospital and the situation quickly devolved into violence. "During the medical evaluation, a significant crowd of anti-ICE agitators gathered at the hospital and became violent. The protestors damaged several ICE vehicles and assaulted ICE officers, resulting in minor injuries to the officers. Assaulting law enforcement is a felony and crime Officers from the New York Police Department responded to the scene and arrested several rioters."

Nine agitators were ultimately detained amid the chaos, with eight formally arrested as NYPD officers moved in to restore order. Those eight now face charges including obstructing governmental administration, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest, according to Fox News.

Despite the violence and the criminal history of the illegal immigrant at the center of the incident, New York Citys political leadership again chose to target federal enforcement rather than lawbreakers. Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, when asked about the clash, claimed he had not seen the video but insisted that "ICE raids are cruel and inhumane," adding, They do nothing to serve in the interest of public safety."

The episode highlights the ongoing tension between President Trumps efforts to restore immigration enforcement and progressive sanctuary policies that shield criminal aliens from removal. New York Citys sanctuary laws, which bar local police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities to remove criminal illegal aliens, continue to place ideology over public safety, leaving law enforcement officers to face violent mobs simply for doing their jobs.
