Charlie Crist, the party-switching career politician who has already cycled through Republican, independent, and Democrat labels, is now seeking yet another office as he launches a bid for mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida.

According to Fox News, Crist announced his latest campaign in a video posted Monday on X, declaring, "Well, it's official. I'm now a candidate for mayor of St. Pete. God bless you all." His post also featured the message, "Im in! #stpete."

On his campaign website, Crist attempted to frame his long tenure in public office as a renewed local crusade, stating, "Ive fought for the City of St. Petersburg in the Legislature, as Education Commissioner, Attorney General, and Governor, and as a United States Representative." He added, "Now Im taking that fight back home, to City Hall, where the city government is failing to address issues that matter most to YOU, my neighbors."

Crist previously served as governor of Florida from early 2007 to early 2011, winning that office as a Republican before abandoning the party during his failed 2010 U.S. Senate run as an independent. After that defeat, he completed his ideological migration by running for governor again in 2014 as a Democrat, losing that race as well.

From early 2017 through August 2022, Crist held a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat, representing yet another chapter in his long political career. He then attempted a comeback in statewide politics, only to be decisively defeated when Gov. Ron DeSantis overwhelmingly beat him in the 2022 gubernatorial race, a result that underscored Florida voters growing preference for conservative leadership and skepticism toward Crists shifting political identity.
