Pritzker Hails Pope As Champion Of Human Life After Defying His Plea On Assisted Suicide

Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is attempting to cast himself as an ally of Pope Leo XIV in the pontiffs public dispute with President Donald Trump, even as his record shows a consistent pattern of defying the Churchs teaching on the sanctity of life.

According to the Daily Caller, Pritzker on Monday publicly praised the pope as a champion of human life, only months after signing a controversial medical assistance in dying bill that the pontiff had personally urged him to reject. The legislation, passed by Illinois lawmakers in December 2025, legalized physician-assisted suicide in the state, despite a direct appeal from Pope Leo, who privately informed the governor of his objections and stressed the Churchs long-standing defense of life from conception to natural death.

Pritzker, who has been floated as a potential Democratic presidential contender, took to X to laud the popes moral leadership, declaring that he lifts his voice for human life. The Pope lifts his voice as part of a higher calling one centered on peace and the preservation of human life, the governor wrote, attaching a photograph from the very meeting in which Pope Leo had pressed him to protect life, a plea Pritzker ultimately ignored while now attempting to project solidarity.

After Pritzker signed the assisted-suicide bill, the pope made clear that his concerns had been brushed aside, underscoring the gulf between the governors rhetoric and his actions. The pontiff said he had spoken plainly with Pritzker about the sacredness of life, only to see the governor proceed with a measure that directly contradicted that principle, CBS News reported.

I spoke very explicitly with Governor Pritzker about that. At that time, the bill was already on his desk Im sure, also, with Cardinal Cupich but we were very clear about the necessity to respect the sacredness of life from the very beginning to the very end and unfortunately, for different reasons, he decided to sign that bill, Pope Leo said in December, according to CBS Chicago, Im very disappointed about that. The popes remarks underscored the tension between Catholic teaching and the increasingly radical social agenda embraced by Democratic leaders like Pritzker.

Pritzkers latest praise for the pontiff came shortly after Trump reiterated his criticism of Pope Leo, calling him weak and accusing him of behaving more like a politician than a spiritual shepherd. The presidents comments followed the popes objections to Trumps stance on the war with Iran, a dispute that has opened a broader debate over the Vaticans role in global politics and national security.

The Illinois governors sudden embrace of the popes moral authority stands in stark contrast to his broader record on life issues, particularly abortion, which multiple popes have consistently condemned. In October 2023, Pritzker launched a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing abortion-rights legislation in states that had enacted pro-life protections, targeting jurisdictions such as Ohio and Arizona that moved to restrict the procedure.

Pritzker has also used his office to transform Illinois into a haven for abortion-on-demand, signing sweeping legislation in January 2023 that not only preserved abortion access but also shielded doctors who helped residents of pro-life states obtain abortions. In August 2025, he went further by approving a bill requiring public universities to provide abortion pills to students, embedding abortion access into the states higher-education system.

Im proud to be taking these steps, but I will not rest on this, Pritzker said in a statement celebrating the abortion-pill mandate. Because we know that anti-choice extremists wont. His language echoed the broader Democratic strategy of framing pro-life Americans as extremists, even as his own policies pushed Illinois further left than most of the country on life and family issues.

Beyond abortion and assisted suicide, Pritzkers progressive agenda has drawn fire for its impact on public safety and border enforcement, areas where conservatives argue that liberal policies have real and deadly consequences. The White House, reflecting Trumps hard line on crime and illegal immigration, has directly linked Pritzkers opposition to immigration enforcement and tough-on-crime measures to the deaths of innocent citizens.

JB Pritzker is a slob whose soft-on-crime and pro illegal alien polices are getting the innocent citizens of the great state of Illinois killed, White House spokesman Davis Ingle told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Instead of pushing Trump Derangement conspiracy theories, Pritzker should apologize to the family of Sheridan Gorman and many other Illinois residents who have been injured or killed because of his states ridiculous sanctuary policies. Pritzker cares more about illegal alien criminals than protecting his own citizens. He is a disgrace.

For many conservatives, Pritzkers attempt to cloak himself in the moral authority of Pope Leo XIV only highlights the contradictions of a Democratic leader who champions assisted suicide, aggressively expands abortion access, and weakens law enforcement while claiming to stand for the preservation of human life. His record in Illinois, from sanctuary policies to abortion mandates, continues to raise questions about whether his public invocations of faith and human dignity are anything more than political theater aimed at undermining Trump rather than defending the vulnerable.
