Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday struggled to identify a single concrete benefit from his partys decision to partially shut down the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), even as the move continues to disrupt air travel and raise security concerns nationwide.
According to the Daily Caller, Democrats have allowed the DHS funding lapse to drag on for more than a month while pressing a slate of immigration-related demands. The prolonged shutdown has hit ordinary Americans hardest, with massive delays at airports as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents either work without pay or abandon their posts altogether.
Appearing on CNNs The Source with Kaitlan Collins, Sanders conceded that Democrats are essentially using the shutdown as a messaging tool rather than pointing to any tangible policy outcome. Asked directly, Do you believe that Democrats have achieved anything as a part of the DHS shutdown? Sanders responded that his party is attempting to send a signal that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is out of control, but he offered no measurable success.
They try to make the point that ICE is out of control. ICE is out of control and it needs fundamental reforms, Sanders said, repeating the talking point without explaining why paralyzing a critical security agency is the appropriate vehicle for that argument. When Collins pressed further And did they make that point in your view? Sanders deflected, replying, Well, youll have to judge that. I think theyre trying very hard.
While Democrats focus on political theater, the real-world fallout has been severe. Major airports are reporting extensive security lines and hours-long waits, as hundreds of TSA agents have quit after weeks without paychecks, raising serious questions about aviation safety and counterterrorism readiness.
Democrats triggered the DHS shutdown while demanding that ICE agents stop wearing masks, refrain from entering private property without a warrant, display identification during operations and halt what they describe as racial profiling. These conditions were largely framed as a response to the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis during the January protests, yet they have been pursued at the expense of national security and basic government functionality.
Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman has been the lone member of his party to back a full-year appropriations bill for DHS, breaking with leadership over the shutdown strategy. He also supported tech entrepreneur Elon Musks offer to cover TSA salaries during the impasse and rebuked Democrats for forcing federal workers to rely on food pantries and community donations.
As the standoff continues, President Donald Trumps administration has deployed ICE agents to several airports to bolster the depleted TSA workforce, underscoring the irony of Democrats crippling DHS while still depending on its enforcement arms to keep the country moving and secure.
