By Friday evening, that posture had shifted from caution to decisive action, with Lewis dismissal coming only hours after the initial statement. The Falcons offered no additional explanation, but the timing strongly suggests that whatever they learned in the interim was serious enough to warrant an immediate separation.
The allegations against Lewis originate in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he previously served as an assistant defensive line coach under former Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore. According to ESPN, police in Ann Arbor confirmed that officers are investigating sexual assault allegations against Lewis, after having been just recently made aware of them.
Lewis, 32, allegedly met the woman at the center of the case on a dating app in July 2024, while he was still on staff at Michigan. Moore, his then-boss, has since been removed from his prestigious coaching post after revelations that he had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer and then became embroiled in further misconduct.
The womans account, as relayed by her legal team, paints a picture of escalating aggression from Lewis in the months following their online introduction. It reportedly did not take long before Lewis behavior became increasingly aggressive over text messages and phone conversations, yet the two ultimately agreed to meet in person in December 2024 at an Ann Arbor hotel, ostensibly so Lewis could return belongings she had previously given him.
ESPNs report did not clarify how the woman had provided Lewis with personal items before they had ever met face-to-face, a detail that raises questions about the full context of their interactions. It was during that December hotel meeting that Lewis allegedly raped and battered the woman, according to ESPN, prompting her to seek help from someone she believed she could trust.
The womans attorneys say she turned to Moore, whom she apparently knew personally, to report what she says Lewis had done. Instead of disciplining or reporting Lewis, however, the womans attorney claims Moore allegedly weaponized this information against the woman, with part of that weaponized harassment allegedly including lewd text messages.
The situation did not end there, as the woman and Lewis reportedly had at least one further in-person encounter. According to ESPN, Lewis and the woman met at least one other time when police in Milford, Michigan, were called to the womans home after neighbors reported loud voices, and both told officers they had been arguing.
The womans attorney now contends that Lewis physically assaulted her client during that incident as well, but that the woman was too afraid at the time to tell police what had occurred. The attorney further told ESPN that her client applied for a protective order against Lewis early last week, a step that underscores the seriousness with which she views the alleged threat.
Both men at the center of the controversy are forcefully rejecting the accusations. Sherrone Moore did not fail to report misconduct, did not reward wrongdoing and did not harass anyone, Moores attorney insisted, adding, These claims are false.
Lewis legal team has adopted a similarly combative stance, signaling that they intend to contest the allegations aggressively. His attorney stated that Lewis intends to fiercely fight these false allegations with the support of his wife, family, and my team, framing the case as an attack on his character and career.
The University of Michigan, still reeling from its own recent scandals, has tried to distance itself from the specifics while acknowledging the gravity of the claims. A spokesman for the university called the allegations deeply concerning, a phrase that reflects institutional unease but stops short of assigning blame before the investigation is complete.
For the Falcons, the calculus appears more straightforward: the franchise has no appetite for being entangled in yet another high-profile misconduct saga. Lewis firing was announced just hours after the teams initial statement about gathering information, and whatever emerged in that brief window evidently convinced Atlanta that the prudent course was to sever ties immediately.
