Kennedy Center Honors To Proceed Amid Renovations And Venue Change

The Kennedy Center Honors will proceed under a new name and at an as-yet-undetermined location while the nations premier Performing Arts Center undergoes an extended shutdown for renovations, according to its president, Richard Grenell.

As reported by Mediaite, Grenell told Washingtons WTOP news radio, It will definitely go forward, despite the closure of the Trump Kennedy Center for what could be a two-year overhaul. It will probably just be in a smaller venue, which just means ticket demand will be even higher, he added, noting that the new location is yet to be determined and that were already looking for different places.

The changes follow President Donald Trumps decision to rename the venue the Trump Kennedy Center and temporarily shutter the facility to address long-neglected structural and aesthetic issues. Many artists, aligned with the cultural left, have canceled appearances in protest of the name change rather than support a major investment in American arts infrastructure led by a conservative president.

In addition to the venue shift, the awards ceremony itself will now carry the presidents branding and be known as the Trump Kennedy Center Honors. The 48th Kennedy Center Honors, held in December, were hosted by Trump, who personally selected the honorees: Sylvester Stallone, Kiss, Gloria Gaynor, George Strait, and Michael Crawford.

According to Mediaite, The 2025 Honors themselves boasted a much smaller roster of A-list Hollywood names than previous years, and the ratings dropped by 25 percent year-over-year, making it the least-watched Honors ceremony in history. That decline underscores how Hollywoods progressive elite have increasingly politicized cultural institutions, even at the cost of audience interest and national unity.

When asked about his renovation plans, Trump said they will probably cost around $200 million because the building is in very bad shape. You know, were fully-financed, Trump added without saying where the money was coming from, a point critics seize upon even as they ignore the decades of deferred maintenance that made such an investment necessary.

Grenell has also charged Democrats with actively undermining the institution following a toxic chemical attack on the Centers outdoor ice rink. He wrote on X, This is so sad & unnecessary @TheDemocrats have been calling artists urging them to cancel and attacking the Center non-stop. Its a calculated campaign.

He continued, And now they have mentally unstable people taking action and vandalizing the Center. Weve seen serious death threats and constant harassment. Commonsense Democrats must speak up before this violence takes a life. Grenells warning highlights a growing concern on the right that partisan agitation against conservative leadership is spilling over into real-world intimidation and potential violence against a landmark cultural institution.
