The Democratic Partys behavior during Tuesday nights State of the Union address descended into such open hostility that even by the lefts increasingly unhinged standards, Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib managed to stand out.
According to Western Journal, the spectacle was a close contest in indecency. Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar repeatedly shouted at President Donald Trump during the address and, at one point, appeared to call him a liar and a sick f*** as he discussed Somali immigrant welfare fraud in her own state.
You should be ashamed, she screamed at one point, a moment that played poorly on national television and underscored the Democrats growing comfort with open contempt rather than debate. Yet it was Tlaib, seated beside Omar and ever eager to echo the rhetoric of her fellow squad member, who delivered the evenings most notorious display.
As much of the chamber erupted in a patriotic chant of USA, USA! largely from the Republican side Tlaib appeared to respond with KKK, KKK! in a stunning attempt to smear a duly elected president and his supporters as racists. Some observers speculated she might instead have been chanting Canada, Canada as the camera focused on her, though that interpretation hardly improves matters.
To begin with, Ca-na-da is a strange choice for a lawmaker sent to Washington to represent Michigan, not Saskatchewan, and it suggests a flippant disregard for the very country she serves. Moreover, the pronunciation itself does not match: One must touch the tongue to the roof of the mouth to say the name of Americas northern neighbor, which Tlaib clearly did not do.
At best, her outburst resembled an incoherent Ca~aa~aaa! Ca~aa~aa! a childish taunt rather than the conduct of a serious legislator. And in truth, KKK, KKK! fits far more neatly into the lefts preferred narrative of the night, in which accusations of racism substitute for argument and historical context.
That narrative was reinforced by Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green, who seized the moment to revive the tired claim that President Trump is racist toward the Obamas. Thats right, resurrecting the Trump is racist to the Obamas canard, as the original report put it, and from there the rhetoric only deteriorated.
The atmosphere grew so deranged that even President Trump, who has weathered years of partisan attacks, appeared visibly exasperated by the spectacle. These people are crazy, Trump said. Im telling you, theyre crazy.
The scene laid bare a troubling reality: A nation that sacrificed at least 600,000 lives in a civil war to end slavery is now routinely slandered by its own elected officials as a haven for white supremacy whenever it suits their political aims. The Democratic Party, which historically provided political cover to the KKK, now casually equates a Republican president with the very organization it once tolerated, a distortion that insults not only Americans but even our Canadian neighbors who still recognize the difference between principled patriotism and reckless demagoguery.
