Yaoning Mike Sun, the one-time fianc of Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, has been sentenced to four years in federal prison after admitting he operated as an unregistered agent for the Chinese Communist regime, produced pro-Beijing propaganda, and followed directives from officials in the Peoples Republic of China.
Although Wang had publicly referred to Sun as her fianc, she has since moved to distance herself as his criminal conduct came to light. Authorities have not alleged any wrongdoing by Wang in connection with the case, and she is not a subject of any investigation, according to Sean Hannity.
In October 2025, Sun entered a guilty plea to a single count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government, a charge that underscores the growing threat of Chinese influence operations on American soil. For years, Sun received and executed taskings from Chinese government officials, distorted our public discourse by disseminating Chinese propaganda, and surveilled groups in the United States that China viewed as threatening its interests as part of a campaign of intimidation, Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg said in a statement.
Federal prosecutors stated that from at least 2022 through 2024, Sun operated on behalf of the Peoples Republic of China without registering with the U.S. attorney general, as required under federal law designed to protect American sovereignty. His case highlights how Beijings agents can quietly embed themselves in local politics and civic life while serving the interests of a hostile foreign power.
During that period, Sun worked to bolster the election prospects of an unnamed figure, identified in court documents only as Individual 1, for a city council seat in an undisclosed municipality. According to court filings, Sun and Individual 1 coordinated at the direction of Chinese officials to craft and disseminate pro-PRC messaging inside the United States, effectively turning a local race into a vehicle for foreign propaganda.
Wang herself had once publicly lauded Sun during a December 2022 city council meeting, tying him closely to her political efforts. To my fianc, Mike Sun, who walked streets with me every single day, who is a real leader of me, Wang said at the time, according to CBS News.
Once federal charges were brought, however, Wang sharply revised her public stance and sought to minimize the relationship. No. 1, hes not my fianc, Wang said in September 2025. Whoever wants to say hes my former fianc, please prove it.
According to the Department of Justice, Sun also tracked the movements of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen during her April 2023 visit to Southern California and relayed the information he collected to Chinese officials. That surveillance effort fits a broader pattern of the Chinese Communist Party targeting democratic leaders and dissident communities even on American soil.
Prosecutors further detailed that Suns activities went beyond intelligence-gathering and into overt political agitation. At one point, he requested $80,000 to stage a pro-PRC rally in Washington, D.C., on the Fourth of July, and he repeatedly raised concerns with Chinese officials about movements supporting independence for Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang while maintaining contact with a consulate official in Los Angeles regarding Taiwanese activities in Southern California.
His conduct represents a brazen violation of our national sovereignty, Eisenburg said. This sentence reflects our commitment to prosecuting those who would extend the authoritarian reach of the Chinese government on U.S. soil.
