Allowing children to drink whole milk at school is now being cast as a sign of white supremacy by a Democratic member of Congress, turning a basic nutrition issue into yet another front in the culture wars.
According to Western Journal, the Trump administration last month authorized schools participating in the federal school lunch program to once again serve whole milk, reversing Obama-era restrictions that had sidelined the traditional staple. The Department of Agriculture announced the change in a news release, restoring a choice many parents and nutrition advocates had long demanded.
Thanks to President Trumps leadership, whole milk is back and its the right move for kids, for parents, and for Americas dairy farmers, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said at the time, underscoring both the health and economic benefits. This bipartisan solution to school meals alongside the newly released Dietary Guidelines for Americans reinforces what families already know: nutrient dense foods like whole milk are an important part of a healthy diet, she added.
Yet Democratic Rep. Maxine Dexter of Oregon has attempted to recast the policy as something sinister, suggesting there is a hidden agenda behind the return of whole milk. She even alleged that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is personally profiting from the effort.
Please ask for the science-based regimens, she said in a video posted to X by RNC Research, framing her criticism as a defense of evidence-based policy while dismissing parental preference. Not whatever RFK Jr. is getting kickbacks on, or you know, whatever whole milk white supremacy dog whistling thats happening right now, she claimed, explicitly tying a common grocery item to racial politics.
At the same town hall, Dexter broadened her attack to immigration enforcement, taking aim at the Trump administrations efforts to uphold federal law, according to Fox News. The frank terrorism that is being invoked when we call that out and stand together, I think people will continue to not want to do that work, Dexter said, likening lawful enforcement to intimidation tactics.
Im not supposed to get political, but if theres a change in political will, then we can absolutely dismantle and abolish ICE altogether, she added, openly advocating the elimination of the nations primary immigration enforcement agency. As noted by KOIN-TV, however, whole milk under the new rules is merely an option for schools, not a mandate, leaving local districts and families free to decide.
The policy shift will affect meals served to roughly 30 million students in the National School Lunch Program, restoring a fuller range of dairy choices that many see as both nutritious and consistent with parental rights. Rollins emphasized that President Trumps decision corrected former First Lady Michelle Obamas short-sighted campaign to ditch whole milk, a move conservatives argue was emblematic of top-down, nanny-state liberalism that ignored both science and common sense.
