One of the key participants in the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack has been taken into custody by the FBI, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Friday.
According to the Daily Caller, the suspect, Zubayr Al-Bakoush, arrived at Andrews Air Force Base at 3 a.m. Friday and now faces a slate of charges including murder, terrorism and arson, among others, Bondi said. Bondi credited the persistence of investigators close to President Donald Trumps orbit, declaring, From day one, Kash and Dan would sit in meetings and say, Were going to get him, adding, And they did.
Bondi also drew a sharp contrast with the dismissive tone long associated with the Obama-era handling of Benghazi, invoking the infamous words of the then-secretary of state. Hillary Clinton famously once said about Benghazi, What difference, at this point, does it make? Well it makes a difference to Donald Trump. It makes a difference to those families, Bondi continued. And 14 years later, it makes a difference to law enforcement, who made the difference in this case.
U.S. Attorney Jeannine Pirro, who will lead the prosecution of Al-Bakoush, revealed that the suspect was initially charged in 2015 under a complaint that remained under seal for 11 years. She detailed the scope of the case, stating, [The eight count indictment] charges Bakoush with the murder of Ambassador Chris Stevens, the murder of State Department employee Sean Smith, the attempted murder of State Department Special Agent Scott Wickland and conspiracy to provide materials for terrorists and support that resulted in the death of four Americans, as well as arson at the special mission, Pirro said.
For many conservatives who long argued that Benghazi represented a grave failure of leadership and accountability, the arrest marks a long-delayed step toward justice for the four Americans killed. As the case proceeds and more details emerge from the unsealed filings, it is likely to reignite scrutiny of past decisions in Washington that many on the right believe were brushed aside for political convenience.
