During a recent interview with CNBC, billionaire Elon Musk defended his support for "conspiracy theorists" on Twitter, which he purchased for $44 billion last year.
When questioned by journalist David Faber about his tweets that appear to support conspiracy theories, Musk responded by stating that many conspiracy theories have turned out to be true.
Faber then asked Musk to provide an example, to which Musk cited the Hunter Biden laptop story. He explained that Twitter and other platforms actively suppressed information that was relevant to the public, calling it interference.
Musk's comments come after the "Twitter Files" were published in December, revealing that Twitter had worked with U.S. government agencies to suppress accounts on the platform, including those with right-leaning views.
The documents also showed that Twitter suppressed The New York Post's reporting on Hunter Biden's laptop, with the former head of legal, policy, and trust, Vijaya Gadde, playing a vital role in the story's suppression. Journalist Matt Taibbi wrote that the decision was made at the company's highest levels without CEO Jack Dorsey's knowledge.
Musk's use of the Hunter Biden laptop story as an example highlights that what were once considered "conspiracy theories" are turning out to be true. As a result, Musk's defense of his support for conspiracy theorists on Twitter is likely to resonate with those who feel that information is being suppressed by social media platforms.
