Border Patrol agents arrested an Afghan national on the FBI's terror watchlist on Wednesday.
The man entered the United States illegally with a group of migrants near Otay Mesa, California, and was taken to a processing station.
According to Fox News, the agents scanned his fingerprints and found a match in the Terrorist Screening Database. The arrest coincided with a massive surge in migrants crossing into the country, as Title 42 was set to expire on Thursday.
Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) criticized President Biden's immigration policies, stating, "Biden's open borders aren't just a gateway to five million illegals, record human and child trafficking, and the deadliest drug crisis in our history. Biden's reckless policy is also an open invitation to even the most wanted terrorists to come to America. They know they'll never have to leave. The nation knows what's happening, and this president has only begun to be held accountable for what he has done."
Title 42 is a Trump-era policy that allowed the Border Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security (HHS) to turn away illegal immigrants over health concerns. The procedure was set to expire last May, but a federal court ordered it to stay in place, and it was eventually extended through this May.
President Biden stated in December that ending the policy was overdue. The Biden administration has seen a record-breaking number of illegal immigrants cross the border, with over 2.3 million people reported to have come into the U.S. illegally in 2022. Last month saw the highest monthly total in DHS history.
The Border Patrol has also seen record numbers of drugs, including Fentanyl, cross the border. President Biden has been loosening restrictions at the southern border since taking office. In March of 2021, he appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to manage the border crisis, and his administration made it known that anyone seeking asylum or those under 18 who arrived without adult supervision would be admitted.
