MSNBC's Rachel Maddow has called on CBS and its parent company, Skydance Paramount, to rethink their decision to cancel Stephen Colbert's late-night program.
During a conversation with Nicolle Wallace on The Best People podcast, Maddow described the Paramount-Skydance merger as a "huge embarrassment."
According to Breitbart, Maddow expressed her concerns, stating, "Maybe you can now see where in history youre going to end up, and nows your chance to try to alter that and try to get right." She suggested that many institutions face similar challenges.
Despite CBS attributing the show's cancellation to "purely financial" reasons, citing low ratings and high production costs, Maddow argued that the move was politically motivated.
"It was absolutely transparent what CBS and Paramount were doing with getting rid of Stephen Colbert. Oh, its a financial decision. Right, because having the highest-rated late-night show in America for years is somehow financially unsustainable now when it wasnt before?" she remarked.
Maddow further criticized the influence of "Trump-connected oligarchs" on the company, claiming they have placed a "right-wing blogger in charge of CBS News." She urged CBS and Paramount to reconsider their stance on Colbert's show. "They announced the cancellation of Colbert everybody knows what its about," Maddow stated.
She highlighted the embarrassment surrounding the CBS News takeover and advocated for reversing the decision, noting that Colbert still has a few months left on air. Maddow's comments reflect a broader concern about the influence of political affiliations on media decisions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining diverse voices in the media landscape.
